What age is this Borsalino?

Hi all,

I have a question about this hat. It’s a Borsalino and the tag in it reads Mufloni (which I believe to be the model.) It has stitched lining and a wind retainer. The brim has a grosgrain binding as well. The crown is 5 1/2 brim 2 3/8 here are a couple of pics of the inside. Any guesses as to dates on it?

Thanks,
M

It ain't new, that's for sure.

Could you show us a photo of the entire hat, including the crown, brim and ribbon? Thanks!

WEll...I knew that request would come up. I didn't show it as the hat is currently open crowned. It wi be blocked eventually by Art I am sure...but looks rather "Ten Gallon-ish" at the moment. Ya still want ta see it?

I'm guessing late 1950s, due to the width of the brim more than anything else. Also, the lining and sweatband seem almost certainly pre-'70s (and, I think, even pre-'60s).

It's clear that the quality is high ... and that it was made when Borsalino really deserved its reputation.

Hey, Magus! That's a really handsome hat. I wish I could find one like it. And in my size too. Oh well... maybe one of these days.

And sorry, no idea on the age... I don't know a thing about Borsalino hats.

Block It

Looks to me like there are some block creases on that hat. Wouldn't a good steam help it find it's block, or were you looking for a different style? Feltfan gave me some great tips on these old Borsas which I have used in prepping them for sale in our vintage category.

No...those are not creases. The felt is so soft and pliable that getting a perfect roundness to the open crown was fairly difficult. I believe that the previous (and origional) owner took the crown shape out to the round because it was used for stage work.

But thanks for the suggestion :)

We've been through the Borsalino dating thing here once or twice before-

I have an identical model to yours(maybe more than one...) and the crease can be popped right out and it looks like yours- soft felt for sure.

Mine is apparently late-ish '40s- so yours is too. Mine has the same liner and logo. So, some time in the '40s we think- erring conservatively on the late '40s.
