We all love our vintage style and clothing history, but we have to admit, there are some things about modern couture that trump vintage hands down. It may be fabrics, or a cut of something, or larger sizes or what have you.

What is/are some things that you feel are better when used to modernize vintage clothes?

I don't like that there aren't lots of ready to wear larger sized vintage. Also, outside of the house ;), I don't really like garters/stockings. I cheat a lot with pantyhose.

More often then not I perfer seamed stockings that are modern with Lycra (Am I thinking of the right word?) they fit my legs better and don't sag as much as the vintage styles. I also perfer modern shoes to vintage for only one reason... they come in my size!!! lol

Well, to be honest, there really isn't anything about modern clothing that I find to be better then vintage clothing. The only advantage a good reproduction has is that you don't have to worry as much about it falling apart/ripping under stress (say, on the dance floor.)

Yes, I'm the same way. I do own vintage, 100% nylon types, too, but try to wear them just for special events.

I prefer fully fashioned stockings--it's much harder to keep your seams straight with modern stockings (the reinforced heel on vintage stockings helps anchor the stocking in place.) I don't have much trouble with bagging/sagging--it helps to order a shorter stocking, though.

I'm definately going to have to go w/ real nylon stockings. I'm the type of girl who has to carry around the bottle of clear nailpolish because I'm just not careful w/ my stockings. So I much prefer "faux" nylons.

Well for me ...

Because Im plus size, I have to do what most women in the day had to do, make their own clothes. Because of that, theyre arnt many clothes that survived. Most of those clothes were made from modified patterns, or made with no pattern at all, but now, I like that I can find a pattern in my size and make those fashions.

I also prefer natural fabrics, and I can choose those now instead of what survived in my size.

I actually get more wear out of my nylon stockings (10-12 wears or more per pair) :) Modern ones run a lot quicker than my fully-fashioneds do (and I am not easy on my stockings, either.)

I've been thinking this over, and I can't really think of anything either. Can't stand pantyhose. I prefer a girdle and stockings any day! If I were to really, really try to quibble, I'd say that some of the button-up blouses could use one more button at the bottom. A lot of them tend to want to open up right were I tuck them in, and I have to pin them shut.

Oh yes, definitely! And if you do run one leg, you've only ruined half a pair of stockings. :)

I know--pantyhose are the work of the devil! And if you get a run in one leg, well, there goes the entire pair!

Your post made me think of something--though I love the look of side-zip/button garments, some of them are very difficult to get into. But they look *great* on, so I can't say that's really a complaint :)

That is true, but it's so worth it! I recently found a mesh hood with a zip up the front at Sally's beauty for getting into and out of dresses after you've done your hair and make-up. It's been a big help. I tend to do my hair and make-up and then decide I'd really like to wear that dress that's a pain to get into!

Exactly--I am not complaining in the least :)

You know, I have a Charm magazine from the late 1940s with an article about "The Day in the Life of a Fashion Model"--she demonstrates the proper way to dress by wearing a piece of chiffon fabric over her face and hair (to prevent smears and protect her hairstyle.) I will have to check out that hood from Sally!

I guess I can say this in the Powder Room--undergarments that come all the way up to your "natural waist" which for me is about an inch below my ribcage! :(
Hurrah for stockings...I am *not* the barelegged type and can't stand nylon pantyhose at all...it's like a giant nonbreathable polyester straightjacket from the waist down. lol
