Everything with the Christina Ricci look alike went smashingly. All the way till the very end. Hoping to be a gentleman, I squired her back to her place and when arriving and heading to her room I offered to grab her a drink and then kill the lights.

Apparently this is the wrong thing in england to say. Whereas, in the states killing the lgihts is a sign of intimacy and privacy for certain encounters, according to her it's a bit of an insult and intimates that you'd rather not see the person you are about to cavort with.

She understood but said maybe it's best to give it another go around in a few days.

:(

So I'll give it another go and give it my best next time round with this lesson in mind.

My accent has become less noticeably northeastern american, I wear clothing that is 60s saville row inspired and for the most part blend in and use pretty much all the same phrases and cues that most do here. THen something like this comes out of the blue and just screams "HEY LOOK AT THE AWKWARD FOREIGNER! HEY OVER HERE (waives arms excitedly in the air)"

Well I'm from the UK and if you'd said that to me, I would have known what you meant & I wouldn't have been offended. I agree with BegintheBeguine, it seems like she wanted an excuse. You're better than that.

Hey, I'm from Cornwall originally...

How can you guys be judging this poor girl..?

I'm not judging her really. Actually the girl herself were like "us cornwall people are special."

As far as I'm concerned I wouldn't mind going out with her again and playing it a bit more slowly next time. She really is a sweetie

If I was her and you wanted to kill the lights, I'd assume you were a bounder and a cad, if a dashingly dressed one! :)

That's right she could've been a real Essex girl. Then again you probably wouldn't have been complaining about that kind of end to a date.

Apologies to any and all Essex girls and the continuation of this particular stereotype

My granddad was from Epping, I'm excused...

How are you, I am neither. A bit of a libertine yes, but beyond that I am always a gentleman. As it was raining I even implored her to take the inside of the pavement so that I would be closest to the street. Should an arrant car come whizzing by I would rather take the splash than have her ruin her dress.

Another Cornishman here, Charles.

To be honest BT is quite right. Not even the two people involved are going to be aware of every factor involved in a situation like this.

Is it really appropriate to be discussing this in a public forum? Imagine the young lady's reaction if she were to happen upon this thread...
