as this is something not to be avoided in oregon, i suppose i should find out sooner than later. i have a hat or two with water spots on them from sudden downpours and unavoidable forays through the parking lot. what is the best way to deal with this, besides not wearing my nice hats for like half the year?

Do the water spots persist after the hat has dried at room temperature? I have never had this problem with any of my fur felts. Ribbons do tend to stain, hough it has never been a problem for me due to rain.

some of the larger ones, they've gotten very faint though. there is one hat that i think i got sap or something on, while waiting for a bus a couple weeks ago. because that spot hasnt gone away, but it doesnt feel hard, and i would think that would crust over.

Dust + rain = spots

Usually "water spots" are due to the hat being dirty/dusty. The solution is to have a nice quality hat brush and regularly brush your hat. Occasionally steam and brush as well. You should not have any further water spots.

If the ones you have are bad, use a damp (NOT WET) terry cloth bar towel or washcloth and rub your hat counter clockwise. You will be surprised as to how dirty the cloth will be.

While I've not run into the problem myself, I've heard that some hat makers use some kind of blending powder on their hats to even out the color of the felt. Rain removes traces of the powder leaving what looks like stains.
