Watch Pockets

Do anyone have pictures detailing what a vintage pants watch pocket would look like?

How would you wear a watch if you were not wearing a vest?

I have a Hamilton RR watch on a 12" chain. On modern pants, I just clip it on a belt loop and stick it in my right pocket.

But, I then have to be very careful not to stick keys or change in my pocket which I always forget. I'm have some pants made and want to be sure and get a watch pocket.

Thanks,
Andy

The little pocket that sits just to the right of the fly was used for change and or a small watch. I just put my watch in the side pocket like I have seen in movies. I used to put it in the little pocket, but it looks silly to me.

just put the keys and all in the other pocket. that's what I do. Just takes time to train your self to do it.

All the best.

Look and you'll see the so called watch pocket. That is the proper place for it.
Hope that helps.

Few of my slacks have them, and I only recently acquired a chain. Handy, though, I stock a number of items in my pockets that I can't do without, and keeping a turn of the century Waltham with a '30s loco engraved on the back separate from items that might scratch it is pretty important to me! The watch would go in the pocket that Root showed there, and the chain attached to a loop that slides onto the belt. Best spot for that loop would probably be at the 3:00 position on the waist, and the chain should be long enough to hang lower than the pocket's opening in order to avoid getting tangled up on it when reaching into your pocket.

I actually prefer using the watch pocket in slacks if I have that pocket. If not, I put my watch in my regular pocket and make sure to place nothing more than a handkerchief in that pocket. However, for the watch pocket near the band, you can always get a shorter chain, or a watch fob. That may look a little sharper if you don't want a huge chain hanging down the side of your leg.

Thanks for the photo, Wild Root. I think a small pocket up high would be a safer place to carry a watch than in the regular pocket. I've already broken a balance staff once with no idea how it happened. I probably bumped it into something.

It took the watchmaker about two months to get the right staff in. But he was nice enough to give me two extras which I keep in my jewelry box.

Now I just need to find the belt hanger.

Here's a late '30s era European military version- flapped pocket and see the metal ring above for the watch chain-
sometimes a cloth loop for the chain- sometimes they even had a patch pocket for the watch.
A different angle on the watch pocket...

When I wear a pocket watch, I end up wearing a suit. So, the keys and such go in one of the suit pockets. I like the long drape of the chain from the 2:00 O'clock loop down to the side pocket. Looks sharp! If I don't wear a suit, but just a pair of vintage pants, I stick my keys in the little watch pocket at top. I only carry three keys, House key, Car Key and the key for my club that I put on the steering wheel.

I don't really care for short chains on pocket watches. I do like the real short ones that attach to the lapel of the suit and it hangs down into the upper breast pocket. But, that's a very early teen’s way of doing it.

Well, I dropped my suit pants off at the local tailor. He can add the slot style pocket to existing pants. He's also putting on suspender buttons.

I'm ordering my new pant with them too and it's no problem for the MyCustomTaior folks to make them.

Thanks,
Andy

I have pockets installed on trousers by a local seamstress in the position as shown in the first photo above. I usually have a 3 inch by 3 inch version installed to hold just about any size watch I care to carry. I'm usually carrying an 18s. I never carry one in a regular pocket, even if you don't carry other items in the pocket with it. The weight of the watch and the lack of support allows the watch to swing around loosely, and if it smacks against a hard object, it can (and WILL more often than not) break the crystal and/or worse yet, the balance staff of the watch....an expensive repair at best. If it is an oddball watch, it may make the watch unrepairable, as watch repairment do not like to restaff watches if they can help it. Always secure the watch in a solid, watch pocket is my advice.
