I have white trousers I love to wear with a boating blazer or similar, though mine are moleskin cricket whites (from Darcy Clothing). White jueans don't really appeal to me, tbh. Beyond the traditional indigo, I don't much care for denim. I'm still on the fence about buying a pair of black jeans for the first time in over a decade.

But that small pocket on jeans is perfect for carrying flashdisc usb stick. I now miss it on other pants that doesnt have it

Ha! Never though of it for that. I do keep one on my keychain at all times. One of my favourite tech innovations of the last twenty years.

In my experience, in the corporate world they are obsolete technology as they aren’t a safe way of storing information.

I guess for personal use they can be handy though haven’t used one in ages and don’t feel the need.

Lots of things are handy (a bottle of machine oil, a shifting spanner) but that doesn't mean you need one as an EDC. I just can't imagine what the reason would be for a USB stick but maybe it's my sheltered life talking. ;)

The thing is they used to be big 10/15 years ago when storing on the cloud wasn’t that common/cheaply available.

These days they can be done without and as I said aren’t not deemed safe by most firms digital security policies and hence almost disappeared from the business environment.

(What’s an EDC? Why native English speakers use all these acronyms?? It’s already a fairly compact language :p )

EDC = every day carry

Items you have on you all the time for their utility or indispensability.

Cheers @barbabus.

Still not quite sure why an acronym is needed for that :p That’s probably because all I bring with me in my pockets on a normal day are my home/car keys and my wallet :D

I'm not a fan of the cloud myself (especially not as just recently I've been gouged by photobucket without-warning going pay-for from free, and not having had the time to whip all my photos off there and onto an outboard hdd) - I don't consider it the most secure option at all, and oftend it's the source of a massive headache, though I do have to use it for some stuff at work. The USB stick is indispensible in academia, though - it's the fastest and easiest way of getting powerpoint and such onto a screen in a lecture theatre or at conferences; even when that's done in advance, it's a standard for back-up.

These days they can be done without and as I said aren’t not deemed safe by most firms digital security policies and hence almost disappeared from the business environment.

Danger of being lost or stolen, I suppose - though the idea that the Cloud is vastly better for security is dubious. Ironically (short of a fire), the most secure way of storing information these days seems to be the old-school, physical printout in a locked safe...

I had no idea what EDC meant. Guess I'm just not that cool to figure out all these initial mysteries.

Heh. I only picked it up myself by browsing pocket-knife websites (it has a major significance in English knife laws).

Yeah i dont trust cloud that much, i use dropbox to upload my work, but all the masterfiles are safe in my own pc with backup in portable drive if somehow one hd might be broken.

I think, tbh, part of my issue with it is a resentment of the continuous shift to a subscription model for everything rather than ownership. I'm fine with Netflix and such (so long as I can still get what I want to 'keep forever' on DVD), but I do have an issue with the idea of being dependent on something such that I'm locked in to paying a subscription forever when there's a viable alternative. I think the general direction of travel is towards the subscription model, though - more profitable in the long run.

I see. I misjudged my audience. EDC is used on websites similar to Fedora Lounge. It isn't an acronym I generally use I thought it would be known here. I don't think anyone who uses it is cool, by the way. It is used by nerds who collect pocket knifes, hand made leather wallets and small torches. The kinds of things you might carry every day.

from stuff I found on youtube it usually consist of 3 knives, 2 flashlights, 1 sak because in their mind sak is not considered knife enough, stack of keys that would scare school janitor, a whistle, a pen that is more stabby than functions as writing instrument, paracord(s) because in stressful city life who knows if you would decide to hang yourself or together with a friend ...

I do carry a lot of "stuff" in my pockets, partly because of my job, but I find your description hilarious... :D
