It's amazing, isn't it? The end is so poignant. Thanks for the reminder, I'll have to watch it again.
As an aside, the first time I saw that movie was in a theater. It was really a different experience seeing it on the big screen but it's wonderful in any format. The cinematography just blows me away.
What I liked about this film was the genius of Orson Welles. I think he was 25 or 26 years old at time. All the actors were unknown at the time and it made them stars and subsequently gave us some good films.
I love love love Orson Welles (in case my signature doesn't make it clear). He's the perfect Hollywood story: the War of the Worlds scare...directed, wrote, edited and starred in what is largely regarded as the best film out of Hollywood before the age of 25...and was in the animated Transformers movie.
Granted, I usually watch Citizen Kane for him, and not so much for the plot. This is one of the movies that they beat into your head in film school, and it generally gets a lot of flack I don't think it quite deserves. I think it's an interesting movie, but when the title character dies in the first 5 minutes, you get the sense that the rest of the films not going to be all sunshine and rosebuds.
