:rage:  There is a certain seller on OFAS located in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia who currently has an Akubra, size 59 with the title "Genuine Australian Akubra Fur Felt Hat - size 59".
This is a hat that I won at in an auction about a month ago. After not receiving it after two weeks I reported it as "item not received" I did finally get a refund, but no explanation or apologies & now this ********* has it up for sale again. I have written the poor sap who now has the high bid, but wanted to warn this community, just in case.

Many Thanks Mr. Decker...

Sounds like a bad situation.

You might want to drop off the link and show us who the guy is. An acception to the no ebay rule for this instance as I don't think it's someone's hat for which we are going to bid.

... here it is AKUBRA SQUATTER ... check out his feedback score, I wish that I had taken a better look at it before I bid.... oh well, his (eventual) refund enabled me to buy this as a second chance offer...

so it is all good, eh?

Thanks again Matt, regards to all,

Thanks for the heads up Rick.
There are some real dirtbags out there. I thinks thats the reason I will not get my Marathon, someone made a offer after the auction was over [more than my $86 winning bid] and now the seller wont send me my hat. I will send it to Pay Pal claim Saturday.
Live and learn.....

RBH, I really wanted that hat - it was my size. But I'm sorry to hear you've been cheated.

Ebay posts warnings to bidders about honoring their bids, even warning that though you've been outbid, you may end up responsible for paying if the higher bid withdraws or is disqualified. I'm inexperienced, but I hope they also penalize (banish/suspend) sellers who refuse to honor auction results.

On the brighter side: If you never wore a different hat from your avatar, you'd always be wearing a lid to inspire envy.

Color me green,

Thanks NewMexExpat !
I love the thin ribbon style hats. I am wearing my Stratoliner right now. It cleaned up well and makes a great every day hat.
What happened with the Marathon was I paid right after the aution was over but never heard from the seller. After 6 days I stopped my Pay Pal. I was not sure the payment went to the right place.Well that made the seller respond, She then said since I stopped the Payment I had Buyers Remorse, and she just wanted to forget the whole auction.
All I had was buyers caution, I just wanted to know where my money went.
Anyway I will see what happens today and will do what I need to to recieve the hat.

I'm definitely becoming leary of ebay sellers who only accept cashiers checks or money orders as payment. I have had two such experiences in which I have sent payment and not received the item. These items were both bought in July, and I still haven't gotten a refun. ARGH:rage: I'm sorry that other's are going through this as well. We should start a thread about ebay sellers who can't be trusted.

I would like to thank everyone who posts their bad experiences. It can help instruct those who have not yet gone through it.

Rick Blaine - the second hat you purchased is really nice!

I think we should blame eBay as much as the sellers.
In a conventional transaction (say a store or a fleamarket)
where both parties and the item are present, the exchange
is almost always straightforward. In an online auction, the
site should provide protection to make up for the inherent
risks. What is there about eBay that stops dishonest sellers
from keeping an item and your payment? What prevents
misleading listings? What stops outrageous "postage" charges?
What stops a seller from leaving you "revenge" negative feedback?

What protects you from understandable errors, like mistakes in
listings, fuzzy photos, ignorant sellers, or items too complex to
assess on an eBay listing? Ever try dating a hat from an eBay photo
only to find when it arrives that the previous owner swapped liners
and the liner and sweatband don't match eras?

Once you have been through the eBay or Paypal process a
few times you realize they are not willing to do much and have
not taken the time to create a clever, difficult to cheat system.

eBay is based on the presupposition that people are all honest.
How safe does that make you feel?

Oddly enough I don't have an ebay ID. I use my ex-husband's if I need something (oh really, don't ask.) I think I've bought 3 things since it started, A 1922 compact purse, a vintage pattern lot, the other was a puzzle box for my treadle. All were items I couldn't get locally.

I prefer the hunt of the chase with yard sales. I figure if I can't find it, I don't really need it.

Oh Rick, that is so un-cool! If I were you, I'd report it to Ebay (if you haven't already) and have this guy kicked off of ebay. What kind of trick is that? Not send the hat to the first bidder and then repost it? I mean, sure the guy refunded you so, that's not the worst case but, why would the guy relist it? Maybe he wanted more money for it? What ever the case, he must not know about a reserve price.

A good rule to go by is ALWAYS look at the sellers history/feed back and such... look at his score as well... if he or she has 100% positive or less. You're pretty safe if they have 100% positive but, if they have less then that, be careful! And most of all see if the person offers refunds... most of the time on vintage items they say: Item sold AS IS... no refunds!

I guess I have had a different experience with Ebay than others here. Over the years I have bought about 200 items and have had problems with only 4 transactions.

I think Ebay has a great dispute resolution system. In one instance I won a digital camera and paid for it through paypal. Didn't get the camera. Filed a complaint. Got the camera. And Ebay terminated the sellers account, even though he had a high ranking.

My rules for Ebay are:

1) Only pay with Paypal

2) Only buy from sellers with positive feedback of over 95%

3) Don't buy from sellers with less than 20 feedbacks.

4) Don't bid unless shipping cost is reasonable.

Anyway, this has worked well for me.

I feel kind of badly griping about ebay. For overall it has been pretty good to me. I have bought hundreds of pez dispensers without a problem:)
But, on a good note, I heard today from both sellers that I have been having problems with, and they are being straightened out hopefully by end of day today.
You all are right though, I have heard too many sad stories about bad ebay buys. As for my vintage purchases, every one has been good, up until now. I have been a member for almost 10 years, so that's not a bad track record. It is still the best place for me to get my hands on vintage that I can't find in my area.
My dad and cousin have both bought Mercedes on Ebay, and they were very happy with their transactions.
As for me, I'm just not going to do business with anyone who doesn't accept paypal, and no business with sellers with less than 20 feedbacks. I also am gonna stay away from sellers with really high shipping costs, which I usually do.

Cripes! I only deal with those who take Pay Pal and have no less that 98.5% rating and I read the remark details. I guess Ebay is simply getting overexposed like everything else in society today.

TM I agree with your rules as well as Daisy, do not "only accept cashiers checks or money orders" to that I add that all my purchases are thru paypal and I only use my credit card. Trying cancel payment with a debit card, is hard to say the least. With a credit card on the other hand, simply deny payment as product never received and you are saved. I have been taken a couple of times in my early ebaY transactions, learning how to beat the cheaters at their own game is the only way to conduct a transaction on line.

I'm right in the middle of an ebay mess now- guy doesn't offer insurance, then the bill includes insurance charge; bill states payment details-none specified- I'd told him I was going to pay via PayPal, he doesn't squeak until I win item, then demands either check or money order...and files dispute, non-payer...like I think I'm going to either never see the item, or it will be not as "mint" as it was. 100% rating as a buyer has no clout, but sellers can try to stack the deck every which way and ruin a perfect feedback score...I was setting up a bid today on something I really need, and after yet another email from this jamoke- the heck with the whole da*n thing, let ebay and its' players play. I'm all done.

Oh, the stories are just getting worse!
I was looking around on ebay tonight, and took a lot of your advice. I looked at the cost of shipping, and read a lot of feedback. I realized that just because someone puts a positive feedback, doesn't actually mean they were always happy with the transaction.
I found a great dress, the woman had the worst feedback I'd ever seen. Complaints of no shipping to buyers, not paying sellers, lying about shipping and clothing condition, and really argumentative and rude in response back to the neg. feedback she received. I don't care how great the outfit looked, no way I'm buying from this person. Ebay is starting to look like such an ugly place. HuH, and just a few hours ago I was starting to feel better about my two messed up transactions being handled. I guess it doesn't matter how great the outfit, hat or whatever it is your buying is. You must take the time to investigate each and every seller, before you purchase from them. Ebay was started on such a great idea, a place for collectors, particularly PEZ collectors. Now it is the marketplace of the world. Too big for it's own good, and not nearly enough corporate intervention in the fraud control department. What are the ramifications for being a bad seller, negative feedback. Some of the sellers I've come across tonight should be shut down.
Also, sorry to go on a rant, I noticed that some of the people with a lot of neg. feedback , had positive feedback that was either from just a few people who kept giving her feedback over and over again, or it was from people who are no longer ebay members. The only real feedback that was good was received from the same three sellers. Kind of makes you wonder if they are doing some sort of fake transactions to up the amount of positive feedback. From what I read about this one lady, it wouldn't surprise me, she did some really horrible stuff. Also, as a buyer, she got a lot of neg. feedback too, such as nonpayment, and then would leave neg feedback to the seller saying she never received the item!!! Wow, I'm sure glad I found out all of this before buying. People like her should not be on ebay. She had 57 negative feedbacks in a year~!!!
