Anyone else collect, restore and use vintage tools? I started out with an old wood working plane that I inherited and since I'm a woodworker it snowballed from there. I have numerous planes, I went through my saw and chisel periods too. My latest tool was my most ambitious , with the help of a fellow I met on the web I restored a 1953 South Bend 9 inch Bench Lathe. Bob

I don't collect them per se, but I do have some old tools I inherited. I have a Shopsmith Mark V that I believe dates to 1956. I also have some block planes and hand saws that were my grandfathers along with a few other pieces that I have no idea what they are for.

That's pretty neat - what sort of tolerances can you get out of it?

For the most part I just make custom handle for old Gillette 3 piece razors. But Dennis Turk the Master Restorer who helped me, had me send him the cross feed and saddle and he worked his magic on it, he put in some needle bearings to get rid of most of the back lash. So the cross feed and compound feed screw are better then when it left the factory. Here's Dennis picture site he makes tool porn. My lead screw rebuild is on page 3. Bob.

Over 25 years ago I went to an auction and the auctioneer reached into a box and held up an old wood plane, I ended up getting it for $7.00. When I went up to get it I thought I had wasted $7.00 as it looked like it was warped. Upon closer examination I saw some gears on the side and figured out it was supposed to move. It was a Stanley 113, coolest antique tool I have. Worth a little more than $7.00 now.

Sweet; I have about 10 Stanley Bailey Bench plane 100+ to 50 years old and several wooden planes with no names. There's something very satisfying about taking a razor sharp plane to a piece of straight grain pine and ripping off paper thin curls of wood. So much more pleasant then the sound and dust created when using power tools.

Antique tools were my first collecting obsession. I tend towards user quality tools that can be refurbished and put back into service in the shop. I'll try to post a few photos of my favorites soon. BTW...GREAT lathe and nice job on the restoration. It's a beauty! :)

I, like many, consider Disston's the "gold standard" of handsaws. I have several that still see consistent use. This one looks like a standard D-8 which was Disston's most popular seller. Check on the face of the blade to see if you can make out any manufacturer's marks. Nice saw!

I had a toolbox full of vintage tools, my great-grandfather gave them to my mother (she's a mechanic) who gave them to me, sadly, a former friend of mine stole them all.

I would love to. I asked him, and told him, 'heck, you can tell me you misplaced them in your house and I'll buy it, I just want the tools back for the sentimental value.' Still denied it. Everyone says he stole them, but without proof there's nothing I can do. I do have a vintage baseball bat that could use some breaking in! I always keep it under the seat in my truck.

...time to find a vintage baseball bat.
