They are a real pain to polish. The answer to your question is: very, very carefully! (Be prepared to used Q-Tips!)

In his autobiography, Malcolm X describes his stint as a "shoeshine boy" at the Savoy Ballroom, in NYC, where the Lindy Hop was made famous. Malcolm talks at length about how he got a good polish going -- and how to put on a show, with lots of flourishes and rag-snapping -- so that the customer would give a good tip.
