I used to visit here as a kid.

They actually had a trained chimpanzee in captivity that would box... you paid your money, they gave you a pair of boxing gloves, and they would put you in the cage with him for a few rounds.

From what I understand, most men would only last one round, because the chimp would pound them severely and rapidly... after about 30 seconds of that, the human competitor would be begging to be let out of the cage.

Imagine if they tried that today, lol.

I wish they had a place where I could lock a victim in a room with a boxing chimp. I have a whole list of candidates.

We used to have one of those cheesy roadside zoos up here, where they had a couple of goats, a seal, and a chimp. The chimp sat in his cage and glared murderously at every passing human. Even as a little kid I knew there was something morally debased about the situation, and I've often wondered what became of that chimp.

We used to have a corner store here on the east side of town that, when I was a kid in the 60s, had a small black bear tied to a doghouse in the parking lot.

As a kid, I always loved to get those injection molded wax animal figure souvenirs for 50 cents; I had quite a collection, at one time...alas, they are long gone now.

Probably worth a ton of money to a collector nowadays, lol.

Me too. I had a Jiminy Cricket and some dinosaurs I got while on vacation out west.

A&W is hard to find in the US, but it's a major player in fast food in Canada. And they have, hands down, the best of all fast-food-joint poutines. A bowl of A&W poutine and a frosty mug of root beer just before you hit Montreal was always a highlight of my Quebec road trips.

I'm just going to say it since super girlfriend is a big fan of poutine and ignores me (a smart move in general): poutine undermines the crispiness of the fries too much. It's a dish that is better in concept than in execution.

We have four or five in the Dayton area. Most, if not all are paired with Long John Silver's Fish and Chips. Haven't had one with carhop service in quite some time.

Although we do have an independent, the Root Beer Stande, which is still a popular car hop joint on the east side of town. I've been going there since I was a kid and it's still a summer staple for my wife and I. And of course, the dog (who gets her own burger, natch).

Our last A&W was in a convenience store. It wasn't the same as the real A&W and didn't last long.
ALL of the combination joints I have ever been in suck. Our local one is a KFC and Long John Silver. Awful. Brings out the worst of both. A ways down the road was a KFC Taco Bell. Awful. Only the Taco Bell remains. Another KFC Taco Bell the other way, both closed.
We used to have Dog n' Suds here. They were actually more popular than A&W for quite a while.
Unfortunately both of our close by locations fell victim to the marketing budget of the golden arches et al.
