Vintage Outerwear: Threads of the Past

Another Similarity—-and I do think this is noteworthy as a peculiarish ID clue ——

These jackets seem to have sorta what I’m terming FALSE PLEATS in their rear construction. The design would lead one to think that the single or double pleat designs are concealing functional pleats with additional leather allowing for expansion in that back panel.

But if you see the interior unlined or probe the pleat —- you see that the design is pretty much entirely decorative. There is no inner fold of leather that allows expansion. I’m seeing this on my jacket and it appears the same as the Instagram and Inspriration jacket rear single pleat designs.

I recently picked up a black version of this jacket so I wanted to post since I happened to see this topic evolving. Of course — my jacket has no label. In fact—- oddly it’s flannel lined and where the label was is like a glue residue. I don’t recall seeing glued on labels very often if at all. Coulda been a name tag.

Anyway— I’m gonna try to post some pics here from my phone. This jacket hasn’t been even wiped down much less conditioned at all yet so it’s a little rough but obviously great for the age.

Hopefully having a few of these in our hands will help get an ID at some point.

Sorry for the dreaded sideways pic articulation SMH….. better pics at a later date.

Wow, this is SPECTACULAR. I've never seen another one of these jackets other than the one in the Lightning Magazine / bill Kelso website. And it has the same halfbelt construction and buckles as the Alaskan jackets!

Amazing jacket man! It’s the same exact jacket as the tan ‘Bill Kelso’ jacket except yours has those fancy buckles that morph onto the half belt.

With your jacket having the same kind of stitch pattern at the chest pocket, same cuff details, same buckle that morphs onto the half belt and the same back design as the Minnesota Woolen jacket, I think it’s safe to say they were the maker.

Terry, friend of mine sent me these ads after I showed her this jacket. Almost the same jacket minus the cuffs, the shoulders fringes and the two lower pockets. These were offered to boys and adult men. Circa 1946 as you can see in the second ad.

One more tiny revelation on the mysterious LA Sport Togs.

I will post my new unlabeled LAtogs. I need to find a some pictures of others like it. that takes an effort. There is a pic in one of the books. LAtogs was more of a long term player than first throught. I just saw at least one in a book.

This is a fun read! Minnesota Woolen, like Seattle Woolen both making leather jackets. Sounds reasonable. The find a Minnesota store label in one.

The two tone is magnificent! What a piece of leather work. They certainly have a unique look.

The zipper date is August 1939. An impressive first post indeed! Yes, I saw this jacket and wanted it myself. Looks like a West Coast jacket. Someone here should identify the maker.

Another Red, White, and Blue with the V Talon war time zipper. I can not say the maker either. Does not look quite like any of mine.

Both players primo examples of vintage. You could stop with theee two and you’d bet set. Of course, you’d miss the big NOS size 46 that is waiting to be sold somewhere in the world.

Cant say ive thought about quitting just yet lol. Theres just so many styles and quirks to these jackets that kinda keep me going. Wheres the fun if you cant be a little financially irresponsible from time to time

You sorta got luck starting with your jacket. These are difficult to find and cost accordingly. I get inquiries every time I post a pic. They are my favorite in the wools. Just hard to find.

Two Pocket Roughwear, Admiral Byrd label. Dated April 1940 with the two way pocket patent number.

I have this style jacket in leather and wool. they are my favorite style. RW tweaked this chassis to produce several variations. Missing pocket flap and the side adjustments have been removed.
