Wonderful stuff -- I think one of the great joys of reading fiction in vintage magazines is getting the full visual experience.

I think my favorite illustrator would have to be Ronald McLeod (no relation to me), who did a ton of work for Colliers from the twenties thru the forties --

He had a very bold, colorful style that tended to reduce a scene to its graphic minimum, which worked for fiction illustration, as well as for covers and ads --

Illustration Magazine is a quarterly that is devoted to classic, American Illustration. Very high quality, and a bit pricey though. I only pick up an issue every once in a while but it's well worth it.

I've never seen it for sale in this country but I see copies on US Ebay from time to time. Seems to be about £15 plus the same for shipping to the UK. Does look fabulous though.

I found these two sites tonight. The first is the blog for Retro Press:

I am redoing my personal blog (not my mommy one) to a more retro feel and these colors will come in handy when it's done.

Despite having been an art major in college, I won't pretend to have great knowledge of vintage illustrators (beyond the obvious and greatly famous), but I do adore the visuals in my old magazines.
I'll try to photograph some soon, to share. Some of you may know the artists.

However, I really like to see the illustrations in context as the page layouts were often really adventurous in the way they combined text and image.
