I believe this is a lady's sailor hat - very popular in the early 1900s.
It's built on an extremely stiff body and covered with what appears to be a very fine and soft fur - almost like a velour felt. I'm not certain what it is, but it is really nice to touch!
You'll notice it was purchased at the Collins Hat Shop in Atlantic, Iowa.
It's not terribly relevant to the hat, but it's really interesting to me, so here we go. This hat shop was a sponsor of the 1937 Atlantic High School year book, and the following ad appeared in the Des Moines Register on December 21, 1947:
FOR SALE Ready-to-wear, accessories and millinery stock must be sold and moved out by January 1st, Priced right. Quick action necessary. Collins Hat Shop. Atlantic. Iowa.
The front inside could probably use some cleaning.
For anything else, see photos (more available if you want) and feel free to ask questions. I don't know anything about this type of hat, so I'm not sure what you want to know!
I'm asking $50 + shipping for it. If you're interested let me know and we can figure out what the shipping will be to wherever you are!
