A few years ago I was in the Oak Lawn, Illinois town court settling a traffic ticket,
and as I walked towards my car I stopped at the town war memorial, which is inscribed
with the names of Oak Lawn residents felled dating back to the Black Hawk War to the present.
One name caught my eye-and the post script: Chute Failure, USA- an E-deuce, probably
a kid fresh out of advanced infantry who went airborne, only to catch the bullet chute malfunction.
I had been inwardly grousing about what I considered an overzealous cop's traffic quota ticket,
and I was quite taken back by my witness to this poignant reminder.
