Vanson! Vanson! Vanson!

I wonder if, even though the jacket itself is out of production, Vanson would make someone a liner for an existing one. (I know Schott will do things like this, so it's possible.)

My custom Vanson Oxford from Thurston finally arrived after about 8 months. It's a size 38 with custom length (23.5"), sleeves (24") and waist hem opening (18.5" across). Dark Maple Bainbridge. I am around 5'8" and currently weigh about 170lbs.

I am very pleased with the fit. Interestingly, I gained about 15 lbs while waiting for the jacket - I wonder if it would have been a bit large if I was still 155-160lbs?

I visited the Vanson factory this morning and they have a Swedish jacket in size 36 in the sale section. I thought it might fit me (40) due to the big P2P but it’s true to size.

One of you should call up and buy it. I didn’t want to scalp it lol.

I think it looks cool as Hell!

Some thoughts (I’ll expand on them in another thread) that might be of interest to you.

New comp weight is more interesting than we’ve assumed. When I walked around the factory and the showroom, there were a ton of extremely grainy beautiful new comp weight hides, both on jackets and the factory floor. I tried on a fantastically grainy Rock N Roll in my size–looked great but I didn’t zip it up. I think I might actually have to go up a size to 42 or even 44 because I think the 40 would have barely zipped up on me on the looser zipper let alone giving the option of using both like on the Lewis that inspired it, unless the double zipper is just for show on the Vanson. (Mostly I was trying on these jackets so we on TFL could have some reference images that aren’t the Vanson site.)

This jacket was one of the smoothest ones–which I think is part of my possible-but-not-sure regret, but in an hour or so of wearing some interesting grain is starting to pop… so I think this might be promising. (Unlike the Rock N Roll or C2 or others there was only one of these in the showroom, so no choice in that regard.)

Worst-case scenario I’ll be the TFL test subject for how grain develops on the smoother modern comp weight hides…

Saw this one when I was there. Thought the leather was interesting.

Might be the one I tried on. There were plenty that were just as grainy though so maybe not.

I think the range makes it clear that these aren’t corrected hides; they just have a preference for smoother (probably because it looks better on race suits–the grain we love would take away from the high tech look).

Its my first Vanson and the leather on my CW Maverick is better than I anticipated. It's not as uniform and corrected looking as i was expecting and some grain is starting to show already. Time will tell. Either way I'm happy with it.

I believe 99% of the general public who buys leather is looking for the smooth stuff. Most would return if they see any grains thinking its a defect.
Only the members here would appreciate the nice natural grains.
The unfortunate part is that it's hard to get a customize Vanson on a direct basis now, so most off rack new Vansons is gonna be made with the smoother cuts. I'd hope they figure things out and start calling the grainy stuff their "Heritage line".
I have a Wolverine jacket on order. Nick told me they didn't have one in stock. That's an awesome jacket.

Especially on the race suits, which seemed to me from seeing the factory to be a huge chunk of their business. Grain on those would look quite weird to most people, as it would distract from the bold colours and patches.

I think they probably use the smoother hides first priority for coloured jackets because grain would stand out more, whereas on the black jackets that we saw, it blends in more.

One thing that might be possible–and the Vanson team is pretty friendly so it’s worth asking–is having someone from Vanson put you on a video call through the stock jackets of the one you want so you can pick one of the really grainy ones. I might ask about this if I decide to get a Rock N Roll down the line.

He’s right. The only one in stock was this 40 that I got and I believe you’ve mentioned being a 42. It’s a slim 40 too.
