I have seen this jacket referenced here a couple times but it seems to be an oddity to some people. It is called a Vanson Atlas and was only listed in Vanson's catalog for a brief time. It comes from the same family tree as the Comet and Mercury model. (I'm guessing someone at Vanson had a NASA fetish. haha!)

All three models are basically the same jacket. The fit & the sizing are the same even though there may be some slight aesthetic differences between them.

I actually own all three models, so I do have some familiarity with them. But the Atlas seems to be a rare bird and I haven't been able to find much info on it in regards to its history.

If anyone can provide any additional information, or at least verify that my info is correct, I would be most appreciative.

I do know that Vanson will still make the Atlas as a custom order. It was actually the inspiration for the yoke on the back of my Blue Comet.

Leadfoot,
Thanks for the thread! The Atlas is one that I haven’t seen before but I really like it for its simplicity and clean lines. Also cool to know that it is based on the Comet pattern. The Comet is one of my favorite Vanson jackets both for its good looks as well as it’s wearability.

It's a bit of a head-scratcher why Vanson pulled it from the catalog.

For real. There's always place on the market for a simple cross zip such as this one - and I can't think of anyone else making one quite like it - so it's really odd they'd discontinue it (and keep some rather questionable styles that I'm sure don't sell as well as this jacket would).

Really great info. I thought the one in the Deals thread was one off or something.

For the Schott fans they have something similar they just put out:

Very cool! That's what I love about Schott, they often just do the right thing. Good they've moved - almost hidden - the hand-warmers further back, not to clutter the front and the angled chest pocket really works in contrast to the diagonal main zipper. I'd personally go with the clean back as well but I'm not complaining.

Lighter cowhide is a good call, too! Just the kind of jacket that'd look better in it.

Some years ago, I've seen a similar jacket by Langlitz. Custom order, it was a perfectly clean cross zip with just a single chest pocket. Thought it was the coolest thing ever.
