Utterly disappointing...

It seems the fit differences between a $400 suit and a $4000 one are little to none these days.

Recently, when I picked up someone at the Tampa International Airport, we spent some time at the mall there. There was a Neiman Marcus, so naturally I went inside. What awaited me was beyond horror. Horrid patterns and fabrics that feel like they could tear apart just from one tug. Armholes that only came in big, bigger, and biggest. I'm not even talking about Armani here, I'm talking about names like Zegna, Paul Smith of London, BRIONI.

Seeing as the Italian brands had "for Neiman Marcus" labels inside, I'm hoping they actually do make a better suit than that.

There's no point trying it on. You can have as expensive cloth as you want. If it's cut like a sack, all the expense in the world won't stop it looking/feeling like a sack.

And though the cloth is expensive, it ain't likely to be that expensive ($4000 for a suit!, what a joke, go bespoke!)

Perhaps, by this point in time, no one has been around long enough to know what a good suit should feel like/look like/fit. I suppose we could all go door-to-door and show people?

I nominate you to head the project. ;)
There really are decent tailors out there who actually do know how a suit should fit. You just have to find them and hold them to the highest standard.
For four grand, I could have at least three suits made of any fabric/style I choose. [huh] I am sure that should fit better than any off the rack generic fitting suit.

J

Okay, they didn't quite cost four grand, that was merely for stating my point. Still... at the prices they were I can think of a tailor or two I'd much rather go to for about the same or more.

My tailor was talking to me about a Brioni suit I jagged for the right price:D . I asked him how much a Brioni was to buy. His knowledgeable 20 something son who works with him said AUD5K.

My immediate reaction was why not go bespoke?

He said it is the label and time poor thing of the 2000s. They want it - they want it now!

Having copious amounts of money is not synonymous with having good taste.
