I'm sure this has been asked been asked before, but how much cuff should show out from a jacket sleeve when the arms are down? And what about trouser break? Which style is the most classic (short, medium or full?) I'm about 6'2" if that matters any.

Varies depending upon personal taste but around 1/8" to 1/4" is normal. More or less as you desire.

I assume you mean break in the trousers? Again, it's personal preference.

If there is any break, try for just a little. As in one slight wrinkle down where the cuff meets the shoe.

If your trousers are too low they are a wrinkled mess dragging on the floor. Too high and it looks like you're ready for a flood.

Try for something like this:

I may suggest being very explicit with your tailor, and no I don't mean swearing at him.

In my experience, many tailors will make the sleeves and pants too long. It is as if most men are afraid to show some shirt cuff and they like their pants dragging on the floor.

When they are measuring my suit, I simply say "I like to show some cuff and I like a slight break in the pants."

For your height you could get away with more cuff showing. Say up to 1/2 an inch. Conversely, you should have little to no break. What is shown in the AA/Esky illustration would look good on you.

Are you saying that one's height would have a bearing on the amount of linen they show? Never heard that one before.

Thanks to everyone. I have a third question; Do you think that with the leftover fabric from the trouser hemming the tailor could add a center vent (I know the main issue with adding vents is fabric?)

Where do you want this vent?

If he means this -

I believe it cannot be done.
This looks to be a feature created with enough original material and not added after the jacket is finished.

I mean a plain old center vent (side vents might be pushing it.) I may just keep the jacket ventless. No harm, no foul.

Instead of telling the tailor to use whatever shirt I might be wearing as a reference for the length of a jacket sleeve, I have him measure from the tip of my thumb. That way all my jackets have the same length sleeve. 4.5 inches is what I use and I expect around 4 to 5 inches would be right for most men.

Cheers, Jim.
