I'm not very knowledgeable on tuxedos (new or old) but need to start looking to buy one within the next few months. I have a great tailor here in town, and want to buy something that exudes quality. If you have any insight into names I should be looking into for a quality tux, please share your experience! Thanks!

Any good quality suit maker will probably make a decent dinner suit. What you specifically need to look out for when looking at tuxedos/dinner jackets is covered in The Black Tie Guide (http://www.blacktieguide.com/) You really could not get a more comprehensive and better informed opinion.

Frankly, there is absolutely no reason to pay retail prices for a modern tuxedo. There are zillions of vintage tuxes to be had that perpetually float around the Internet, better made and with classic styling. Their ubiquity means they can be picked up for peanuts. If you do decide to go vintage, line up a good local alterations tailor who can amend the garment as necessary, and DON'T buy the jacket and pants separately. There is nothing worse than non-matching shades of black, or worse, a combo of black and midnight blue.

Especially if you are a 40-42, there are TONS of beautiful vintage ones out there for $200 or less, made out of materials that are no longer produced; namely those worsted wools and the grosgrains. There are a lot of great vendors out there online. PM me if you want further details, etc.

Although I too would suggest to go vintage, please please make sure the fabric is still in good condition as there are so (too) many suits out there and people wearing them that choose style but forget the actual condition. Especially in a formal setting you don't want to look cheap and looking like you are wearing your grand dads beat up Tux. Evryday sports coat maybe, but not a formal occasion
