Trousers: Top button/metal clip dates?

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered in the past, but I'm fairly new around here so please bear with my redundancy.

Around what date did US/Canadian clothing companies stop using a button on the waistband and switch to those rectangular metal clips?

Hard to answer that question because none of my trousers have the metal fastner. They all still use buttons.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. All my trousers have this. Please disregard this inane post.

I just bought a dinner jacket with trousers that have the metal clip at the top. The jacket is dated 1926 and the trousers appear to be the original matching pair; both were tailored in Canada.

The metal clip on these is flatter and wider than is typical today but functions identically.

I've had two suits from the 40s with the button at the top. Maybe there's no age correlation for these things? Tailor preference maybe?
