The buckle on trousers - located at the small of the back - seen on older clothing. What is this called? Is it useful? Is it more useful for certain body types? Should you wear trousers with this feature without a coat or vest to conceal it?

Just like side adjusters.
Seen on older, high-waisted pants.
Useful and a nice touch.

Waist cinches were a staple of l9th century trousers. Before the 1860s, they were often with laces instead of buckles. (Earlier 19th century waistcoats were also laced at the back, instead of buckled.)
