Traveler packing

How does one “properly” fold & pack a Traveler and expect to get a shape back?

Open crown, fold and roll?

I bought an Akubra Traveler for…traveling.
Tired of having 40’s Stetsons smashed in transit.

Headed for Norway, can’t carry/wear hat all the way.

Thanks, Fred

This is how I do it with my vintage borsalinos:
open crown, brim down all the way around. Fold lengthwise, roll.

I did have a video, but it turned out too dark.

My Akubra Traveller in Regency Fawn is my everyday hat. I've mauled it. It springs back to life without a problem. The trick with packing a hat, I've found, is to avoid folding the brim. You can roll it, but don't fold it. I've never packed my Traveller before, but if I did, I'd probably just smash the crown down.

Good advice

I do the same things; brim down, fold the crown (but not the brim) down the center, roll. When you unroll the hat, it will look misshapen. Unroll. I find to get the shape back, you need to wear it for 10 or 15 minutes.

Fred- devil's advocate here but why can't you wear your hat and carry it in transit to Norway? There was a topic about traveling and what people do with their hats and most plop them on their knee while on the plane.[huh]

I think it would probably depend on the width of the brim. Like my Explorer/safari-style hat, the Traveller has a pretty wide brim. For a fedora or a cap, on the knee would be fine, but with a wider brim it would get in the way and be hard to handle. In fact, I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do with my hat on the way to England this July.

As far as the Traveller goes, if it was me I'd just smash the crown down flat like they show in the picture on David Morgan's website.

Thanks for the advice; I'll try to roll it. I bought it to travel.

Twitch, the journey to Norway (Polar bear seeking) is a LONG trip via several large and small aeroplanes (some of it as pilot) and then by research ship. Luggage is very restricted. Can’t wear wide brimmed hats all the time, but won’t go without.

I expect hats to get smashed while sleeping etc. as they did on ventures to Antarctica and Alaska. Several vintage Stetsons will never be the same.

Some like it cold.

Thanks guys,
Fred
