So why the patch edit? Fans on social media suspect it was done to appease Chinese authorities and moviegoers -- the country now boasts the second-largest movie market in the world. The film is also financed in part by Chinese Internet giant Tencent, which more-than-likely had something to do with the decision.

I've never seen Top Gun. In 1986 there were more compelling movie choices - Blue Velvet, The Fly, Ferris Bueller's Day off, Aliens, Manhunter, The Color of Money, Hoosiers, Stand By Me. It was a good year for movies.

For the record... I have seen it, and I found it to be your typical testosterone fueled '80s schlop featuring Hollywood's greatest one trick pony. Top Gun 2 is an easy pass for me.

Never seen Top Gun. Tom Cruise is a solid actor though, imo. Liked his performances in a large number of movies.

As for the jacket changes.. let's wait and see what makes it to the final cut, I guess. Trailers often are edited for whatever reason.

Top gun is my guilty pleasure. I watch it every time it’s on cable. Yeah it’s corny but the entire decade was corny and God bless it for being so. I can’t wait to watch this sequel, I’ll be diving head first into Kenny Loggins fueled danger zone. But good lord let’s hope for a speedy recovery for iceman. Movie won’t be the same without him. Or Kelly Mcgillis...lol

I must have watched Top Gun 50 times as a kid. Loved it, and am actually rather stoked for the sequel-CGI looks to be minimal. There will be an F-14 in it, but as far as flying F-14s go, only Iran has them...

As for the patch edit, I hate it.

My first ever leather jacket was a Mall Shop version of the Top Gun jacket!

I don't have it anymore and can't remember much about it other than it was Brown, removable shearling collar and random patches all over it.....oh and it was 2 sizes too big lol...but damn I thought it was cool as hell.

Not sure I'll bother seeing this in the cinema although I do usually enjoy Tom Cruise popcorn flicks as guilty pleasures...

As for the jacket patches edit.....really? this is a thing? people have too much free time on their hands.

Back in the day I remember Siskel & Ebert in their review of Top Gun pointing out the obvious absurdities of the movie, i.e. the "enemy' never being actually named. Who was it exactly, lol? Libyans'?...... Martians? I didn't see it until the late 90's but I enjoyed it for what it was, a pretty good action flick. I just had to engage my willing suspension of disbelief.
Same thing on the sequel. If a Navy Officer (or for that matter any service) doesn't get promoted within a certain time-frame he is forced out. It's in the reg's. It happened to the Captain of my unit. He was a nice guy but was dumb as a box of rocks and couldn't pass the promotion exam. His total time in service didn't help him get over the hump as far as points needed etc. But that's real life, lol.

That said, I'll probably go see it and enjoy it too. I really like Jennifer Connolly.

It's pretty cynical of me but I think this patch thing is actually a marketing angle being played to generate interest and ticket sales.

Well, what do you expect from the Chinese involvement. Money talks these days, and they have plenty (more than plenty). I am pretty shocked that no Chinese extra is in the casting, yet to be shown? I wonder when it will be time for the Chinese market to move on as they are starting to make their own versions of everything, movies like Wolf Warrior, Wandering Earth etc., I suspect US-centric military movies are not going to appeal that much? They even have their own stealth interceptors these days! Anyways....

I suspect I have watched Top Gun more than 20 times when I was a teenager as my dad bought the Top Gun 'LaserDisc' to test his AV system (which we call home cinema these days). My first leather jacket was also a G-1 like flight jacket with a removable fur collar. The movie itself was far from perfect, but still one of the best in terms of jets without CG. I do not think anything has ever come close to it. And if you have good memories, in 1986, there was also Iron Eagle with a couple of F-16s. Besides from his 'so-called' religion, I like his movies, especially the more recent ones when he stopped trying to over-act and prove himself.
