Top Coat and Duffle Coat Questions

Seeing as I've posted down here for the first time, recently, on a trench coat question, I'll bother folks with this one.

I don't have a top coat. Even though a normal winter is very cold here, the last few have been sort of warm, and I've been lazy in cold weather and just gotten by with my trench coat or a regular coat. But, it's pretty apparent I can't keep doing that.

I can't find a top coat here locally. I've been thinking of ordering one. I don't need a really pricey one. I noticed some seemingly nice ones are on the Joseph Banks on line catalog. Anyone have any opinion of these?

Secondly, I've thought of getting a duffle coat instead. I suppose I can wear a duffle coat rather than a top coat, in the same application. Is that correct? I passed up on one at Sierra Traders early in the year and haven't been able to find one since, but I now note that one is on sale at Joseph Banks. I'm 5'7" or 5'6", depending on whose measuring, and wear a 42, so I can get away with a 42 reg or 42 short coat, but I'd guess that I'd need a 42 short in a duffle coat or top coat. Does that sound right?

Size sounds right...

Check out The Third Man- Trevor Howard makes a duffle over his uniform look pretty slick!

Check the lining of a duffle coat. I agree with Flitcraft that Trevor Howard looked awesome in "The Third Man" in one. My Burberry duffle coat is lined with wool, so it's nearly impossible to wear it comfortably over a jacket, though I've tried!

Now is a great time to shop for coats as everyone is desperately trying to get rid of them. A duffle isn't going to be as dressy as an overcoat, but that can also make it more versatile. It just depends on your needs.

I would also suggest watching ebay as outerwear tends to be underpriced relative to value in my experience.

I would definitely go with a short length.
