To beard or not to beard?

This is probably not accurate or truly representative but some of these are funny!

I just came across this thread while surveying the outer reaches of the FL. I am going to severely date myself with my comments but here goes. I first started growing a full beard when I was in college in 1977. It looked good to me but I shaved it off after a couple of months. I regrew the beard in about June 1978 and did not trim or reduce it until January 1979 when I had a photo taken for an identification card for graduate school. When I looked at the picture I resembled Dan Haggarty as Grizzley Adams. I also had long hair back then. Anyway.....I had the beard trimmed but have had a beard continuously since June 1979. These days I keep the beard trimmed close to my face as I prefer the appeance and the women seem to like it. I have thought about shaving it off but for now it remains

I would love to grow a full beard but alas I have too many bald patches on my cheeks and sideburns. So I am limited to a Van Gogh or a goatee. I shaved off my goatee when my Vietnamese barber told me I was starting to look like Ho Chi Minh.......not the look I was shooting for.

That was where I was for the longest time. I would periodically try to grow a full beard but get frustrated with the patchiness and shave if off after about six weeks. Then someone suggested that I wasn’t giving it enough time. Twelve weeks to a year was suggested. For a variety of reasons (COVID, up-coming retirement) I decided to just let it go for at least six months. The bad news: it started out splotchy and my supportive wife even says she had severe doubts. The good news: after six months the patches started to fill in enough to give me hope. By the one year mark I had full coverage. Now it looks good enough that I doubt I’ll ever shave it off. But it started out very patchy.

Check out the following thread that is specifically about splotchy beard success stories and has “before and after” pics.

Funny clip: a barista meets Zeus. From an upcoming Super Bowl advertisement featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Zeus, complete with mighty (fake) beard. I think Zeus is the archetype of the powerful, older, bearded male; so I salute the concept. And, let’s face it, Arnie is pretty entertaining.

But one question to the heavy bearders.

What do you do at night, when trying to sleep with all the fur? Doesn't that tickle and itch on your neck? Do you bend it together as much as possible?

I had a beard that I let grow out until I had to cut it off. Used a razor, tough to
shave earlobe-to-collarbone clean face, took a forty-five minute scrape to do it,
but whisky tango foxtrot.:)

I've thought about growing out my beard until it hangs somewhere over my chest, but made the mistake of telling this to my wife who told me that would be one of few reasons she would divorce me. She really doesn't like long beards, and I kinda' like having her around, so I keep mine trimmed.

Aaall the time:

"One moment, young man!"

"Young man, can you help me?"

"Young man, maybe you can help me."

"Young man, are you from here?"

"Young man, can you tell me, where...?"

Would not happen, when I would let my beard grow 10 days! :D
