Tips for Buying a Panama Hat In Quito, Ecuador

In December my wife and I are going on a cruise/tour of the Galapagos Islands. The trip will include a day and a half in Quito, Ecuador (no chance of visiting Montecristi or Cuenca). The tour company has scheduled most of our time in Quito, but we'll have a little free time, and I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities to shop. The travel books say Panama Hats are widely available and mention a couple of shops: Homero Ortegas and Marcel G. Creaciones. I'm willing to spend big bucks, and I think I would recognize a good hat. However, I have little idea of what would be a fair price or if and when bargaining might be appropriate. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Why don't you let me know where my brother-in-law can meet you and bring some hats. Are you going to Guayaquil? Bargaining is the name of the game if you buy in a shop.

How cool would that be? You get off the boat, and you have your own personal visit from a panama specialist. That would be pretty impressive.

I think you should go with what Panamabob suggested.

My friend went to Quito and he bought me a cuenca for about $130 plus tax at one of the shops you mentioned. While it's a fine hat, I'm sure Robert's option will be better.

While you're at it, make sure you grab me one too;)

Happy sailing.

Greetings to the Lounge! Here's hoping you clear sailing and great hats. Like we say in the Lounge."No hat: no fun" Actually, we don't say that. But, hey. I just did! Ocean voyages must be a lot of fun, I hear great things about them. Remember this, an ocean voyage is for a while, a nice hat is forever. Almost.:)

Does your brother in law make Pandora hats? I will be in Ecuador in November
