I just found this for $5, with a couple of moth holes, and lots of dirt I managed to remove with a shoe brush and soap, the edging is very roughly sewn, and the lack of a bow combined with the faintest mark on the band that might have once been a badge and two airholes on each side, stirs memories of railway travel in my youth, so if not some sort of school hat, it may well have been a stationmaster's hat or the like. I show the detail of the back of the band which is sewn straight to the side as it is all round... which is unusual, in my experience. It was round as well, requiring some blocking on my part. Anyway the colour matches my finest d/b suit exactly, and the combination gives a fair impression of a ticket inspector or the like...which raised the question, can one wear a "work" hat with a fine tailored suit?

If you wore this hat with "your best double breasted suit", no one would notice the suit, only the hat.

Five bucks for a beater is good. But this hat married with your fine suit would have the same look as if you found some old shoes from the dumpster and wore them to church.

The hat you got should stay a work hat.

Hey - I resemble that remark! Does anyone else remember the "Cheap Suit Serenaders" with pleasure?
Some of the most memorable people I saw at past Queen Mary Art Deco bashes looked like people on the street in the backround of pre war films, dressed down, but period.

boo hoo

It's just that the colours are so perfect, but I suppose if I wanted to look like a country railway detective it would be nice. All I need is a railway watch (got that), and a Bucheimer sap (still searching).;)
(cops didn't carry guns in this country until the 70's)
