I was browsing through some Three Stooges episodes on Hulu the other night and noticed that most men there wear all sorts of nice hats.
Women were also dressed well!

Throughout all of American history (perhaps elsewhere too), people were on a drive to "be refined." Everyone aspired to get to and look like a higher class. So far as I can tell, this lasted until the 1960s, when the counterculture in its era of prosperity went in another direction. It is the search for refinement that makes people in all the older movies wear suits all the time. Even at dinner in their own houses, with just their own families, they're dressed up in suits and ties. A different mentality than today's casual attitude.

Normally, the Stooges don't wear hats that grab me, but I like the one Larry's wearing in this shot... is it from The Sitter Downers, or do you know?

I wouldn't be able to pass it up, either!

Whenever I watch old movies and see beautiful hats, dresses, handbags, etc. I always wonder if the studios preserved them and they're sitting in the back of some storage room somewhere but I know it's not possible to save every nice garment.

I can't speak for movie studios, but most theatres have been through several rebuilds and modernizations over the last 40-50 years - due to the enormous development of tech-equipment. In that process much "old stuff" has been dumped. Disastrous, yes - but space is always a problem [huh]

A lot of movie costumes came from costume rental outfits. They maintained large warehouses full of all kinds of costumes. The stars would have costumes made for them, the rest got rentals. In the case of B movies often they rented everything.
