I used to go to Shakey's Pizza as a child to hear this song. I loved it then and still do.
It deals with reminiscence upon youth and romantic idealism.
Isn't amazing she is singing about the good old days.
What is it about humans that always look back?

I think, as we get older, we reminisce at thing we once could do but can do no longer.

I remember the parties and fun we had in college. I loved parties. I rarely go to them these days and the energy and excitement are just not there.

When I was young, I could play softball quite well and even slide into bases. Can't do that anymore.

There were romances galore among me and my friends when I was young, people I was interested in, flirtations, fascinations, etc. No libido now.

I could hike and camp in the mountains for days on end, never wearing out, always had a lot of energy. No more.

That is not to say that my life today is tedious or boring or sad -- it is not. I do other things -- I draw, paint, write, sculpt; I have time for trips and luncheons with friends I could not have then because I had to work, so there's some trade-off.

But, one gets wistful for the days when she could slide into 2nd base, get up, dust herself off, and get ready to run for home plate.

I decided to go skating about 4 years ago with my grandaughters.
I used to be a skataholic as a kid. Well of course the races started. I don't know what happened ( a temporary insanity moment) I did pretty good and was grooving around the turns. Well, I grooved all the way to the floor on one turn. I didn't even know people could get a bruise like that. lol lol
All the way from my ankle to my hip I was black, blue, green, purple etc.
That was the day I think I realized time had slowed me down. lol

I recall a NY Times article I read in the late 70s or so; it always stuck with me. It claimed that people yearn for the old days not because they actually were better but because no matter the outcome, good or bad, the future - 'X' the unknown - is known. The forties are thought better because we now know that Hitler was defeated. The fifties were better because we now know we never had that feared atomic war. People suffering from nostalgia want to go back because they know the future is going to be safe. Food for thought.

This makes alot of sense. With everything going seemingly global it does sort of make you yearn for the yesteryears.
I don't think it is just me either though I personally am happier at my age than earlier overall.

That was the last song played at the first radio station I worked at -- went out of business in 1986, and I actually played the final record. They owed me $900 in back salary at the time, so the moment was more than bittersweet for me. (I did finally get the money though -- but not without planting myself on the owner's doorstep and refusing to leave till I got paid.) Those were the days, indeed.

What I don't want to feel, nor do I like to hear others say it, is that they wish they could go back and do it differently.

My mother does that, is always saying "I wish we'd moved to _____." Or "I wish you had not moved to New York," or half-a-dozen other things.

I could see why she might say it if some great calamity had befallen us, but she has had a good long life, as did my father. Her two kids have been successful and she has three lovely grandchildren and five secure and healthy great-grandchildren.

"Why," I said to her, "would you wish us a different future? For we would have had one if we'd moved to _____." and "I would have missed out on some important events and people in my life had I never moved to New York."

Better to say TWTDMY and weren't they lovely than to live with regrets.

I still haven't figured out why mother has a litany of "I wishes." She gets annoyed when I challenge her on it.

I wonder if some of the i wish has anything to do with the depression really as in 1930s.
I found this in my father a bit. Maybe they got so used to not having that dreaming went away or was seen as vanity or frivolous or bragging.
So when they got any amount of success they could not enjoy it due to this being ground into them.
Sometimes people also don't want to declare successes because they think it will somehow vanish if they do.
I am an optimist but a true warner for lack of better word.
I am amazed that any of us are still alive to be truthful. lol
My family alone has been thru amazing trials and things.
I tend to not take anything for granted and I tell my kids all the time.
I like boring. Bring it on. I have been around enough drama and people who like( no love) drama enough to last me forever.
Peace in my life is what I strive for.
