And where do I stand in this battle? I know Christian. Smart man, well dressed man, a Beau Brummel man. I myself am not a Dandy though I like to be well dressed.

I haven't yet reached the point where I want to shine my shoes with champaign... I hike in my wingtips on occasion. I shine them with pollish when they are in dier need and I am heading to an event. I get my clothes to a shabby point then I wear them more. Who is the Dandy King? Is it turning more to costume on some men and just style on others? I take my risks now and again and may be taking more in the future... comes down to courage in many cases. Chensvold has the courage. Whimsey has the courage though mixed with outragiousness. I think Chensvold is the more sedate though who is the more Dandy?

Battle of the Superlatives!

To call oneself the Best or Most is sheer folly. It is to call upon yourself judgement and doom after eventual failure to live up to the title. How often does the toughest guy in the world find out he's second best, the fastest gun in the world rates second? It tends to be inevitable.

Better to get an honorable mention and call it good, because if you seek it, madness surely follows.

Dandies are silly. Very amusing from a distance, but I think real ones would drive me nuts! lol
Of course. Your man should be thinking about you, not if his handkerchief is just right in his pocket. :)

Christian Chensvold and I have spoken many times. I like him a lot. However I feel saying who is a true dandy and who isn't is a tricky game to play.
Early on I had a talk with him about the misunderstanding that dandies and fops were homosexuals: a misconception many people had that prefer simple and minimal labels.
Now who is a "proper" dandy over someone else is something I can't do. Mostly because I don't dress well enough or cultured enough.lol

Sincerely,

I agree with Sefton!!!And am in the same boat.lol Thank goodness.

And Brummel was an 18th century dandy, not 17th as the article notes.
Interesting article i will say.

The Lord Whimsy book is actually very well written, and he does express the aspects and troubles of the vintage lifestyle without arrogance. For instance, he writes about the difference between continuity and nostalgia, which is an essay I think everyone here at the Lounge should read. Here, though, is the nut of his thinking:

'Generally, speaking, the distinction between NOSTALGIA and CONTINUITY is as follows: Nostalgia yearns to bring the present to the past; Continuity wishes to bring the past through the present. Nostalgia is detached from the world, is stagnant, and never changes, whereas Continuity is engaged with the world and is in constant flux, combining what has been with what shall be. Nostalgia is a glib, vulgar appropriation of the past, a schtick; Continuity is a more sophisticated, profound internalization of the past, a synthesis.'

I went to hear him speak at a bookstore, and I thought him quite honest in his dandyism. Given the words he wrote about Nostalgia being a costume, however, I thought the fellow speakers he had on his panel were just that: pretnders. There was a style writer whom I thought too far over the top to be serious, and I wasn't much for his tailor that he had on hand, and when I stopped in at the bloke's shop, I was much less.

Anyway, I wouldn't write Whimsy off as pretentious. I believe the press is camping it up (camp is another subject he rails on) because...well, that's the press now, isn't it?

Regards,

Senator Jack

NOSTALGIA

Senator,

Thanks for the recommended reading!

Can anyone tell where this paraphrase is from...

In the begining God created heaven, earth and mankind then created NOSTALGIA and DOUBT.
