Hi all,

Couldn't resist the title.:D Anyway, does anyone know where you can buy real cotton thread in military colors (OD, Dark OD, Taupe, Khaki)? Been looking around and haven't been too successful. Probably just didn't look in the right place. I'd prefer to do any repairs or sewing on of insignia with real cotton using the correct colors. TIA.

Yep - I've picked up a stash of original military spools for reenactment use over the last few years on ebay & at events. Look for Red Cross sewing kits - they usually include a few spools & will add to your impression to have anyways.

Well behind the front lines!
I’m not accusing you of anything, but any time I hear people looking for original cotton thread, I’m reminded of a guy I knew who horded cotton thread in any color he could find and used it on insignia sewn to jackets to boost the price among collectors at shows (as synthetics glow under a black light, high-end collectors know this). Now that being said, the easiest way to find said thread is to find an original sewing kit, which isn’t all that tough to find. If complete, they’ll have original thread with the colors you’re looking for. I fixed a hole in an original M-41 jacket a while back using a kit in my collection.

Hi Vanessa,

Thanks for the idea. I'll give that a shot. :)

Hi p51,

I have often wondered if some of those high priced E-Bay "Airborne" uniforms were truly originals or if someone took all the necessary parts and pieces and 'fixed them up'. The payback for such skullduggery is quite good. I've seen some ensembles go for over $3000. As for me, my stuff is just for me. If I sold anything it would be because the original piece of clothing really didn't fit me well and I upgraded. So far, I'm a pack rat. My wife wonders just when I will stop buying uniforms..... ;)

They're called "Hump Jobs" check out Mark Bando's 101st site (Triggertime).Sometimes ATF or WPG sells buttons, fabric and other uniform parts. Great idea on the sewing kits now to find them.
