It's been done,...

........remember "The Wiz" from 1978 with Michael Jackson? Probably not, right? So the thing about remakes of classics is that they can never supplant the original in the hearts and minds of those who grew up watching said original. Movies come and go through the revolving door of entertainment, and no one remembers the majority of them for very long. Attempts at remaking classic movies such as this I think, are doomed to obscurity.

As heard on the grapevine:

There were rumours about Zemecki being director, which he appears to have declined as he is otherwise busy. There was also talks about Robert Downey Jr to star in the movie, if it ever takes shape.

'Wizard of Oz' belongs to my favourite movies. I have no problems with remakes, some are bad, some are actually quite good.
Right now though I cannot think of any current actress to cast for Judy Garland's role. Can you?

A remake? How dreadful! Seriously Hollywood needs to fire anyone that wants to make a remake of a classic. There are hardly any original movies anymore and that's just lazy and sad.

Actually, it's going to be a dark, brooding gritty take on the traditional story, with Noomi Rapace as a pierced, tattooed, mohawked Dorothy who beats the Witch to death with her own broom. The Wizard hasn't got a chance.

(Oh, and Dorothy's sidekicks are a cowardly zombie, a heartless vampire, and a brainless Hollywood studio chief.)

So Tim Burton is taking over?

You knew it was going to happen, but seems like this is a true 'remake' as in perhaps using the original script, not like The Wiz which was a differnt telling of the story. They seem to be remaking the movie, not the story. Like Psycho. It just goes to show you nothing can be timeless anymore. No one's work reaches the highest peak. Everyone always thinks they can do it better. Its just arrogance.

QUOTE

"That’s right, Hollywood’s never-ending (not to mention shameless) quest to remake every movie that has ever existed has claimed yet another victim.

This bit of news comes right on the heels of the announcement that Disney and Sam Raimi are developing The Great and Powerful Oz, possibly starring Robert Downey Jr. Other Oz projects in development include Surrender Dorothy, a sequel to The Wizard of Oz to be directed by Drew Barrymore, and an unnamed Oz sequel from Warner Bros. about Dorothy’s granddaughter.

Speak of the devil, I would love to see someone compile a list of all the remakes going back a decade alongside their critical and financial success rates. With every passing year, there seem to be more and more remakes and less and less original entries in big-budget cinema. Are these remakes so fiscally successful that they’re worth the artistic integrity of the studios and the filmmakers who churn them out?

Sometimes I wish I could just click my heels together and wish the remakes away. "
