Our local used boat dealer is brokering this beauty:

Considering the cost of a new one, it's definitely a steal at 4.5 million - and I'll bet they'd take an offer of an even 4 mil (which would leave you a few bucks left over for fuel).

Just before Christmas 2003, the carrier was listed for sale on auction website eBay by a user claiming to be a shipbroker representing the owner.[40] Bidding reached £4 million before the auction was removed from the website under rules preventing the sale of military ordinance.[40] An auction in Rio de Janeiro in February 2004 also failed to sell the ship.[39] Sometime between February and July 2004, the carrier was towed to the ship breaking yards at Alang, India for dismantling.[39]

A similar tale of events followed a certain Russian Submarine. First used as a restaurant, then used for the filming of K-19. It wound up in St. Petersburg, Florida. I believe there were several attempts at sales and auctions, the price deteriorating to the point of just trying to cover the port fees (a mere 300,000). Finally the USS Saratoga organization (not sure if it's museum or foundation) acquired it and moved it to Providence. I got to go on a tour of it prior to it's sinking at the dock, I believe it's since been raised back to floating again...

Great for an entrepreneur... Have some ideas already: Refurbish it to a theme-park, hotel (with indoor skating, pools, tennis yards...).... Unfortunately my wallet isn't thick enough.[huh]

Infamous place, Alang. That's where the SS France/Norway was broken up. Impoverished Indians go there to work for meager wages in an incredibly dangerous environment. Many are severely injured, of course with no compensation. Looks like the Indian government has finally shut down the operation, or at least curbed some of the worst abuses.

Jings, an aircraft carrier would make quite the houseboat if I could find the right mooring location along the Thames! lol I'd have all my accomodation inside (opulent, turn of the century-style Turkish bedrooms, with ensuite Deco bathrooms, Deco ballroom and cinema, a few old school lounge rooms, a library.... oh, and a swimming pool, of course). The flat top deck I'd keep clear for cycling on - excellent exercise, also BBQ space... Maybe a mock-up of a plane or two as a 'feature'? :)
