The shoulder belt

I'm driving in my car, turn on the radio...

And I notice that one of my ties is fuzzy exactly where the shoulder belt crosses it on my chest. It's bad enough the left shoulder of my leather jackets gets worn faster than the right but why must my poor ties suffer?

I tend now to pull them up and lay them over the shoulder belt so they don't get rubbed.

One of the most annoying things about driving are the seatbelts. They are always constricting you in wierd ways, especially those terrible ones that "lock down" and you have to unbuckle them to get enough slack again.

If someone could invent a safety device that would replace the seatbelt I would be eternally grateful.

My solution to the rubbing on my jackets was to hang the jacket (rear passenger side of the truck). Don't have a solution for the ties since I wear bows...

I remember years ago (like 25 years) someone developed a seat that was on tracks. In a forward impact the seat slid forward and upward in the tracks changing the direction of the forward energy. I saw a demo on TV and it seemed to work quite well, no seatbelt necessary. I wonder what ever became of it?

I suspect that it didn't go anywhere because a. there's no room in a modern car for the seat to move very far and b. it wouldn't protect the driver/passengers from being thrown about or even out of the vehicle in any other type of collision.

On top of that I'm having a hard time imagining how that would slow the body down sufficiently to keep it from being thrown forward from the seat as the body has it's own momentum that has to be dealt with.

Of course, I'm not an engineer or physics expert-I had a hard time with algebra! :p

Cheers,
Tom

I wonder if one of those shoulder belt pads would work to minimize both? It would still rub, but perhaps a change in the material (such as sheepskin) coming in contact with the jacket and tie would be easier on the leather and fabric.

Just a thought. Haven't tried it myself.

Cheers,
Tom

My problem is ID badges at work...we're required to wear them, above the waist and visible, so most people use lanyards. But the badge/holder/clip/ring rubs across my good ties. I'm forever searching for better ID badge holders and lanyards.

I don't want to just clip them on my shirt, because that messes up the shirt pockets.

Grrrr....

Wear super cheap but still attractive ties to work? That way you don't -care- that they get messed up by the badge holder....

Is there such a thing? :) I keep finding when I'm shopping for ties that I drift to the most expensive ones, not knowing of course that they're the most expensive ones until I find the ones I like most!

Carebear I've seen an inexpensive kind of fuzzy material pad piece that you can put over the belt. I suppose it velcros or snaps on. Anyhow it is actually made to keep the neck from chaffing due to the sharp belt edge. I know I've seen them in those mail order catalogs which have all sorts of oddball but sometimes handy stuff.

Have you considered a magnetic ID holder?

It may be a problem if you are using magnetic swipe cards, but if you are using an RF ID card you should be alright.

You may also be able to use a Leather Badge/ID holder either on a chain or over your pocket.
