Fun read. I'm not sure if all is lost for the tie though. Things come and go. I see a lot of new bands wearing suits and ties on Letterman and Conan. So who knows?

Now that is just fabulous. Amen to it all! I love seeing men in ties. And suits. Anything besides khaki Dockers and blue shirts!
And I don't think that cufflinks are on the way out. I have managed to find many in my travels as an antique dealer, and now my beau has 17 or so cool pairs, and I am now busily converting all his dress shirts from button cuff to French cuff so he can wear all of them! He LOVES to dress nice, even though we are both rapidly learning that he is not an off the rack kind of guy. We recently found a place nearby that caters to large black men, and they carry tons of Stacy Adams suits and shoes that will actually fit my man properly. Plus, it's not just brown and black items, we are talking purple and red and bright blue, colors that will look fabulous on him! They even have zoots, which we are very excited about! He recently bought his first hat, a stingy brim that looks wonderful on him. He says he feels like a million bucks wearing that hat. Thanks to alot of the information gleaned from here and pictures of all you fine-looking fellas, we have both learned how to dress him better.

Sorry, I guess I wandered a bit fftopic: , but the article was great, and very relevant to how most of us seem to feel about dressing. We don't care what folks say anymore, because we look pretty darn nice compared to alot of the rest of the world. As do all of the Loungers on here, I would say!

The bands in suits on Conan are, of course, show biz. In show biz a tie is fine, because you're assumed to be in costume. In daily life, people just think you're off - as if you were wearing earmuffs in the rain or overalls to the beach.

The tie is a garment whose only purpose (now) is a set of social rituals. There is no longer any "just because" for wearing one.

Get this all the time when I try to even wear a jacket.

As someone who wears cufflinks without a tie as well, I approve of this article.

A dressed man's silhouette is nearly identical to any other's. With the decline of haberdashery, this is even more so.

I actually got the old funeral question - from a young man in the ministry, no less.

I was pumping gas somewhere along I-80 in Iowa after Christmas 2005 when I was asked the $64 question. And I actually was coming back from my grandfather's funeral.

In restaurants, I have gotten compliments from waitresses about my taste in suits & ties (I actually have 74 ties; at least half of them belonged to the above grandfather). The "Al Capone" and "Wall Street" remarks usually come from vagrants trying to flatter me out of some cash.

Hmmm...

Interesting. I work with guys who wear flight suits and BDUs. These are manly men who are amazingly tolerant of my jackets, fedoras, bow ties, suspenders, etc. Never a question and often many positive comments.
