Fedora and Art...I WILL be in contact, but am waiting until I get "stuck" before I bug ya. Thanks a TON for the generous offer you guys are :arated:

Here is the next progression or the project so far. First let me display my high $$ tools:

A Case pocket knife (just like my grandpa carried) and a 100% horsehair shoebrush (never used on shoes) The shoe brush weighs in at a pricey $4.99 at Target.

I carefully slid the knife blade behind the ribbon and slit the threads. Then used it to detach the liner. It was partially glued into the hat so extreme care was taken in doing so.

Then I set to work counterclockwise brushing the hat. Its coming cleaner bit by bit. Here are shots

Next I will set to work on the underside. Secret plans for fixing that! The white area on the right is glare.

The liner is very stained...so we will see.

And these "hat pin" holes will be covered by the ribbon.

In this there was a real little treasure...a VERY cool hat ribbon pin!

More to come in a few days or so.

Magus, it appears that the body has faded some, although the ribbon will disguise that. But have you considered that Art trick of turning the body inside out?
I applaud your courage and industry. It IS kinda fun, ain't it? If enough of us learn the craft, perhaps we will spark the rebirth of the local hat cleaning shop and, maybe, one of these years a guy will no longer have to ship his hat out of town to get it properly renovated.
It does seem a pleasant way to busy oneself in his retirement years. In my case, those years are approaching more rapidly than I ever thought they would.

The inside-out trick works wonders for a faded hat. One of my beater project hats had a telescope bash and faded nicely around the initial bash, leaving a halo. The brim was pretty faded, too. I turned it inside-out and it was a night and day difference. The only thing you need to remember after doing so, is that you now have to brush the hat in the OPPOSITE direction, since the nap of the felt now faces the other way. (I'm due to get a onus in mid April, so I'll get a digital camera then and can share pics!)

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I don't think I am quite ready for the inside out thing. Yes its faded a bit...or dirty...not sure which. But the brushing is evening things out. Working on it is a personal challenge...I know that true artisians like Fedora and Art will always be in need.

John in Covina...MI theme...perhaps...though knowing me its probably going to be the "Get Smart" theme...

Well, Talk to you all later...

OH wait...hang on...my shoe is ringing..

"Yes...Chief is that you?"
