Just received a dvd I ordered that had 1 silent film and 1 silent short on it. The short is "The Making of a Stetson" from 1925. Its a quick run thru from shots of beavers and nutria to the final product. Here are some stills I captured from it.

Anon has a hat similar to this (from perhaps as early as 1922) and it even has that style ribbon courtesy of Art!

Looks like Art's shop!

Nice shots. I have seen it personally, the making of a felt hat.
I used to visit Art Fawcett all the time when he was still here in the Bay Area.

Exactly same activity, but certainly, Art did not have a room full of young ladies working feverishly on hundreds of hats.

That's great, buler!

Do you mind sharing your source for the DVD? I'd love to be able to use the film in one of my lectures.

Thanks for posting these.

I bought the dvd from reel classic dvd's. I can't really say if it was worth $20. But its cool. I was hoping to see more finished hats from the time period.

Nice. I wonder how similar it is to what was shown here in 1915.

Lefty, I just noticed that they put (c.1925) which I believe means circa or (approx date). So I'd bet this is the 1915 film.

Perhaps I should get this video and send a copy to Stetson so they could remember how they did it once. ;) :p

Its amazing just how many people were involved and how much labor it took to make one hat!

Saw a reference to the discovery of 75 old silent motion pictures, including "The Birth of a Hat", an industrial short by Stetson. I'm guessing its the same one discussed in this thread.
