The magnificent incandescent carbon bulb

Hello gang, I wanted to share something with you all!

I found this little ebay store the other day that sells Ferrowatt bulbs... Ferrowatt makes very fine reproduction carbon filament light bulbs that copy the very popular Mazda GE bulbs from the late 1800's to about 1920.

The prices are kinda high compared to modern bulbs... but, they are the look if you have victorian or early depression era lamps!

I bought one and LOVE IT! I know I can use these without burning out a 100 year old bulb now... it's great!

Yes, at one time I didn't think it was much of a difference... but, since I bought an original GE Mazda light bulb, I fell in love with the warm, soft light these bulbs put out... No modern bulb can produce the light a 40watt carbon filament bulb makes.

Mine too! lol however, I plan to buy one each month to slowly build a collection of the repops... since they look so correct!

My wife and I are right now buying a restored 1924 bungalow with original and reproduction light fixtures that use those bulbs. We love the visible fillament and the soft light. Down with fluorescent glare!

How are they on energy consumption?

Well, I use these bulbs and originals in my lamps; my energy bill hasn't budged a red cent.

These bulbs aren't very high in wattage... I believe 60watts is the highest they sell... and they give pure, natural, warm light which is healthier then low consumption compact fluorescent bulbs... and they don't contain led or mercury!

But if ya believe the green weenies "replacing a bulb like that with a flourescent is equivilent of taking 47 cars off the road....lol

The NY Times magazine had an interesting essay by Alice Rawsthorn, on the change over to compact florescents. She felt the change was important for the overall energy savings but did point out the many downsides of the new bulbs. When I read it, I thought "Does she read our forums?"
