I like them okay, though I'm a much bigger fan of The Brothers Four, a group I've loved since childhood. I'm also quite fond of the Kingston Trio; more so the Stewart Trio but Dave Guard was fun, too. In fact, I'm quite big on the early Sixties folk boom! It was "supposed to" replace Rock music, but then the Beatles changed everything...
I saw the Limelighters and the Kingston Trio a couple of summers ago at Chautauqua Institution. They were great. I thought it ironic tho, that the Kingston Trio opened for the Limelighters, because 50 years ago the Kingston Trio were HUGE, and at their original peak in the 60's the Limelighters were never near as big. I don't know how many millions "Tom Dooley" sold, but LLers never had anything like it. People don't realize today that between Elvis and the Beatles, the Kingston Trio was probably the biggest music group that came along.
Anyhow it was a wonderful evening.
I saw The Kingston Trio in 1959 on the same stage when they were at the height of their fame, a spectacular evening, and the Brothers Four the following year. What a different era it was in musical tastes!
