I often times find myself tipping my hat to someone, without actually wearing a hat.

I will just bring my thumb and forefinger up to my forehead and tip the brim - and it's not there.

Am I losing my mind completely or am I not the only one who does this?

That's not a ball cap. It's a fighting man's cap! Well at least a motor pool cap.

sorry, yep the mind is wandering afar...

only would tip a non worn hat if someone tipped their hat to me first, then I would make some type of reply

An A-3 would qualify as a 'utility' cap.

I wear a ballcap as a uniform item(actual unit issue with the 940th ARW insignia on it), but it gets replaced by a utility cap when on deployments.

...I feel a bit awkward when I have to give the 'nod' to someone in lieu of touching my fingers to my hat brim.
