I just adopted a small hunting dog. I don't hunt, it's just that the little dog bagged my heart! Anyway, my neighbor suggested I get a shotgun, some decoys and a smoking jacket to complete the picture. Any other suggestions?

What kind of hunting? Hound, bird-dog, spaniel?

Personally, I think a shotgun completes MOST outfits. :D

I think she is a chocolate lab mix. My father thinks she is an Irish setter. My neighbor is sure she's a golden retriever.

She has dark brown fur with blond highlights. (It sounds cute, but it just makes her look scruffy.) She also has pink lips, light brown eyes and webbed paws. She weighs around 30 pounds and is about a year old.

She has a calm, mild disposition, but she's really suffering from separation anxiety whenever I leave her alone. She does not fetch (yet).

Chesapeake Bay Retriever?

Sounds like one. If so, they are gorgeous and well sought after (so be careful the doggie doesn't disappear). They are like labs but with really wavy hair. A photo would be appreciated!;)

Possible?

Truly, one of my favorite breeds. There were quite a few in Philadelphia when I lived there.

As for accessories, how about a Barbour wax cotton dog jacket. Those are rather smart.

Sounds adorable, but a little small for a Chessie, I think. They're usually 50+ lbs, was my impression. Though Chesapeake Retrievers are great dogs.

Sounds like she might be part Brittany spaniel, actually. They're one of the bigger, more athletic spaniels, and the females can be in the thirty lb. range. They swim and are very clingy, loving dogs. They're also pretty darling, the ones I've met.

The only accessory you may really need is a Frisbee. A hunting dog generally needs a good amount of exercise. Give her a lot of love and attention, and get outdoors with her as often as possible.

Hey, you've described my dog walking kit. I have an old Egypitian waxed cotton Barbour (the Barbour factory discount shop is about 20 miles from here!), (but the jacket is well worn, ripped, patched up, great patina though, but not the sort of thing to be seen trekking down London's Knightsbridge or New York's Manhattan in), moleskin pants and shirt and a pair of side strapped green Hunter wellies!!! It's not a fashion parade you know at 5 am in the morning trudging across muddy fields with the dogs :) (only the rabbits and deer to see me!).

As much as I love my two boys (Schnauzers, as you know), the Chesapeake is just a great outdoorsish field dog, happy in the muddy fields and woods as swimming across a lake or river!! Pure doggie heaven!:eusa_clap

Molly (the dog) and I we went to the vet yesterday. Molly is actually 45 pounds and the vet and her assistant believed that she is part golden retriever and part Australian shepherd or cattle dog. The Chesapeake Bay retrievers do look a lot like her, though. The vet said she might enjoy agility courses.

After the vet, we went to my parents' house. Molly still didn't want to fetch or play with toys, but she did look out into the open field behind the yard, lifted one paw and pointed at something.

Well, the only hunter I know is my father.

Molly looks very much like some German long-haired pointers I saw on the web.

Hmm...that DOES sound good... but I haven't got a hunting dog... lol

I do wish I knew where to get warm winter clothes for a dog that has fine, thin hair, no insulative fat, shivers, and has very little stomach hair, but is 40 lbs. All the sweaters I see are for Yorkies and Pugs.

Usually I put Mocha in a todder's fleecy sweatshirt, but then you have to wrap up the arms so she doesn't trip.

I thought this web site might be a good resource for vintage hunting pictures.

Lots of neat old hunting gear and vintage work wear; I personally really like the vintage hunting/ sportswear look for my wintertime attire.
