Here is the pinnacle I bought from the outlet store February 13th for $64.50. I can't find anything wrong with it but I'm sure there is something. I probably just don't have enough experience to spot is problem(s). It does have the punch hole in the sweatband. It just didn't punch all the way through so it is kinda like one of those "hanging chads".

The problem is that damn feather ... take that thing off and it's a $300 hat

Mystery solved ;)

I had one hat, a 70's or so Stetson Downs, that had a feather on it. I left it on there for awhile, but eventually took it off of that one, too... before I gifted the hat to a young man at church. LOL, I didn't want to pass on any bad habits! :)

I have posted the new Whippet on a couple of threads today, but since this one is where I learned about these, here goes. Overall, I have a good opinion of this Hatco Outlet find. I agree with Moon about the stitches in the ribbon, they are big and obvious, same as on my modern Strat. Not a refined ribbon treatment. Maybe down the road I'll have Mike Miller's deft fingers fix this, it does bug me. The felt is soft and the brim is easy to snap. The Hawk's Bill is in need of some attention, but not a deal breaker. The factory crease is OK, but I would have preferred an open crown so I could put in a proper diamond. This is a nice hat, and for a buck twenty five, how could I go wrong.

I think it looks pretty good. I like the color combo on these JP Whippets. I have a couple of vintage hats with a "hawk's bill," most notably my Dallas. I figure it adds to the character and hey, I don't want them all to look alike.

Great catch.

I like it, Mike! The tall blocky crown is excellent, and I like the teardop, too. A little steam to the front brim and you're set! New ribbon stitches would top it off perfectly.

Red,
What is the fix for the hawk's bill? Is it steam and spreading out the turnover? It's an issue I have not had to address before.
Thanks ,
Joe

For comparison purposes, maybe a close up picture of the ribbon treatment and stitching anomalies. Thx.

I was just thinking of images this morning. Here goes... The bow shows the glaring stitching used currently by Stetson, I think it can be easily fixed by someone (Mike Miller) with better eyes and steady fingers. The new image from this morning shows some very slight spots on the ribbon, unknown source. Not really a big issue, only seen and noticed by myself.

And the Stetson pin will be removed today, it is an eyesore on such a great hat.

Yeh the tacking stich is a little obtuse. Some steam will help the ribbon.

Here is the pinnacle I bought from the outlet store February 13th for $64.50.

About 35 years ago, I was standing in a long line at the much-anticipated, North Face outlet store annual sale in Berkeley, CA. This was before North Face sold out to VF Corporation and this small local company had unique, high quality and differentiated product. This was also before outlet stores became a mainstream distribution channel, as there are retailers today that produce lower-price-point lines just for their fleet of outlet stores. Anyway, while standing in that line, an executive at North Face was overheard to say, "I'd rather be dumping all this product in the (San Francisco) Bay than doing this." Now I understand what he meant because selling a $350 (big money back then) goose down parka for $75 diluted the brand. Maybe HatCo should close its two outlet stores. From the comments on this thread, I wonder if the outlet store has become an acceptable avenue to unload questionable product and in the process is diluting the brand. I don't know who owns HatCo, but it seems to me that person/entity would instead want to implement quality assurance manufacturing processes and then sell for MSRP.
