I think this is unusual... maybe.
An Alpine/fedora hybrid?
I had been looking for an Alpine hat with a wider brim for a while, and it is the only one I've found. An Alpine hat has a narrow brim almost by definition, doesn't it?

I've always thought of them as more tapered, too. A 2 1/2" in brim is nice. I think hybrid is the right word.

It's certainly unusual. Velour hats do come with wider brims and in fedora style, but in that case they don't have the rope/cords for a ribbon (and are a different colour as a rule).

Another modern hat offering (I don't consider any of my vintage hats to be particularly exotic). "Less than a dozen" were offered through JJ Hat Center during Stetson's 150th year in 2015, so I'd say that qualifies as rare. Singer Nikki Lane and musician Joe Kwon also have one of these as does Mr. Deckard.

Rare for sure. I’ll keep an eye open now that I know it exists.

Max, The form + dimensions are more common for earlier Trachten. The hat is probably mid 1950s to early 1960s. Here is another example.

Hi Max, thanks for asking.
Thoughts:
I’d have to say my most rare hats would be the Hopalong Cassidy Valentine then the French Berteil then a couple others that are not so much rare as they are unique and not numerous.
By definition rare connotes few in number, scarce, not often seen or in terms of unusual, limited, interesting, all of which are subjective. What i find unusual or interesting is not necessarily shared by others. However when paired with limited numbers or rarely seen I think we all might agree a hat to be interesting no matter the style.
The Valentine is basically a “one off” without question, the Berteil is seldom seen, both unique, unusual and to me interesting.
I’ll have to get some fresh pics of both and a couple others i feel are unique.
In the mean time Max, you can keep this thread rolling for quite a good while, much to our enjoyment.
Good thread idea.
B
Are the pictures ready yet, Bowen?
