While the current games are going on, I thought I'd find out about the very first Olympic Winter Games. It seems they were organized by the French Olympic committee, and held at Chamonix, France, near Mt. Blanc. They were called "Semaine Internationale des Sports d'Hiver" ("International Winter Sports Week"). They were on a tiny scale compared to our modern extravaganza.
Among the noteworthy competitors was the 11 year old Sonja Henie. She came in last in the figure skating that year, but went on to win 3 gold medals in '28, '32 and '36, and become a very big star in Hollywood. You can really give Sonja Henie entire credit for the existence of figure skating as we know it today. She was a real superstar.
