All I have to say about this ending is WHAT THE .... (do not re-edit!)! I guess the producers wanted you to "fill in the blank" or something but c'mon! Seven episodes later and this is what we get???

I wanted to atleast see that annoying kid AJ get whacked.

I don't watch it, but a bunch of people on another forum are ticked off. Apparently, they ended it without a solid resolution, probably so they can make a movie.

Oh, yeah... and something about a bag of leaves.[huh]

What happened? Exactly what David Chase wanted to happen - LIFE. The same life we came into seven years ago - and may revisit seven years from now. A life of betrayel, sudden-death, self-serving egos run amok, sickness, secrets, violence, love and family. And, yes, onion rings. Nothing more was ever promised - nor should it have been expected. That's all this show ever was. And, like life itself, it was at times exciting, frustrating, brilliant, dissapointing, boring and wonderful beyond belief. And that's what made it so good - and so bad.

Now, as a storyteller myself, I may not agree with the choices he made, but I have to respect the bravery and honestly behind them.

Farewell, Tony! See you in the funny papers!

If David Chase wanted to show "life happening" he would have had something happen! Worst episode of The Sopranos I have seen. All the build up and in the end, a flimsy, nothing of an ending. [huh] That did not even leave room for a follow up story for a movie. Makes me feel foolish for having been sucked into the Hollywood hype I am so proud of not ever being sucked into. I thought my cable went out at just the wrong time. Bad stuff. I think it made a fool out of every die hard fan.

SPOILERS

As a rabid Sopranos fan, I expected this type of finale. David Chase is notorious for NOT giving the people what they want. Traditionally, the second to last episodes from season to to season were filled with violence, and the finales were always more quiet and reflective. I can't believe Phil actually got whacked.
Has anybody figured out the cat? I'm sure there is symolism there somehwere.

If you recall they showed a clip from a prior episode of Bobby Bacala and Tony Soprano sitting in a boat fishing on the lake. They discussed what it would be like to get whacked and one of them said that it would be like everything suddenly going black. Thats what happened at the end... it all went black and there was no sound. From this I would guess that Tony got whacked. And the guy going into the bathrooom before it happened seemed to be a salute to The Godfather when Micheal went into the bathroom to get the gun to whack Sterling Hayden, the cop.

And........

The last thing Tony saw was his daughter entering the restaurant....the only one in the family with hope for a future.

It was Fantastic

I disagree with Tommy. No one knew they were in the restaurant and there was no reason to whack Tony at that point. The mob was united under Little Carmine who is a freind of Tony's and the war was off. Plus, they almost never whack you in front of family (though Phil's family might take issue).

If the fellow going into the bathroom was anyone at all, he was a fed.

Mostly, the entire scene was designed to build and hold tension. That scene was a way to express viscerally exactly what Tony's life is like: he cannot enjoy a mundane moment with his family without facing the door and looking at everyone who comes into the room. The scene cuts off in media res to further emphasise this.

I saw quite a bit of resolution. Keeping the presmise that it was another day in Tony's life, nearly every other major character had a resolution, Paulie, AJ, Carmela, Carlo, not poor Sil, but I had the feeling he would pull through. (Is her dreaming about being a salesman somewhere?)

I wanted the show to end with Tony waddling down the driveway, stopping to look up at some ducks flying overhead, but I'll take what Mr. Chase contrived; at least he gave us the hit on Phil!

-The cat was Christopher back from the grave, like some ancient Egyptian cat. [huh] lol

And....

The war didn't have to be over. With Philly Leotardo, Bobby Bacala and Silvio gone the only one left for someone who wants to take over is Tony Soprano.
With him out of the picture its easy for someone else to take over.
How can you say the guy going into the bathroom is a fed ?
The last episode is really effective because it will have people, just like us, arguing over the events and interpreting them in various ways for a long time to come.
It opens up the possibility of a follow-up movie, spin-off, or whatever they think will make the most bucks. I heard somewhere that there is a possibility of a spin-off with Silvio as the main character. He's not dead yet and it would be easier for a new series to be on its own if Tony isn't around any longer.
We'll see.

I guess I did not miss much.
You did.

And yes, Tommy, that was the exact intent and Chase accomplished it well. I think this will help him in developing his next project. I wouldn't count on any sequels to The Sopranos. They are a very talented cast that will easily split off in other directions.

There is no way Little Carmine would put a hit out on Tony. They were friends and Carmine hated conflict. He was always the peacemaker; between Johnny Sac and Tony and between Phil and Tony, unsuccessfully in that regard. ;)

Initial thought was that the stupid DirecTV went out at that moment.
I thought the guy who came in with A.J. was a bodyguard until he went into the restroom.
And then when I backed it up and watched again, it seemed like the whole family probably got whacked. They waited until all four were there. The Mysterious guy who is obviously watching them goes into the bathroom and it's over. That makes me think they all four died.
