I found this very informative article from 1921 while researching Coal Tar Dyes. Coal Tar Dyes were used to dye fur and wool felt hoods. The article is a great overview of the dyeing operations and also includes some interesting comments regarding Austrian Velours (and velours in general) and European Men's Wool hats (stiff and soft). The Coal Tar Dye industry (also its derivatives: photographic chemicals, medicinal flavors, synthetic phenolic resins, and explosives) was dominated by German companies.

This the fur felt section of the article. What applies to wool (first part the article covers the dyes in detail) in most cases also applied to fur. Interesting observations regarding Austrian and Italian Velours.
