The Canteen is back

Just happen to run across the company that makes new metal canteens. Definitely more retro than an Ozarka bottle. I'm seriously considering a double walled version in khaki.

You might want to reconsider your choice. There are some reviews of these canteens somewhere out there on the web that I read previously. The double-walled version actually does not cool (or rather keep cool) any better than the single-walled version, and you lose a lot on capacity because of the double wall. I really like the look of these canteens and their price is the same as the reproduction WWII ones on many websites. It therefore comes down to a choice of whether one wants aluminum or stainless steel (and of course period accuracy if that matters).

The Canteen covers are suppose to keep the canteen cool. One has to soak the covers inside. This will cause the canteen to cool through evaporation. What we did in Boy Scouts was to fill a Canteen half way and stick it in the freezer uncapped. Next day fill the rest with water this worked with Aluminum and Steel.

Heck, if you want a new-made canteen to use that has a vintage look you can’t do any better than this!

If the double walled version doesn't work then I'm not interested either. I have a steel coffee carafe that's double walled and I can fill it with ice tea, leave it in the blazing sun while I mow the yard and the ice doesn't even melt. I was hoping that this would work that well...oh well.[huh]

I saw these canteens awhile back and really liked the look of them, and the fact that they're stainless steel. While searching online for where to buy them I stumbled across a weird website that actually did a fairly decent gear review of the U S Canteens. Here's the link to the review:

I am still all for the stainless canteens and might eventually get one, but it would have to be the single-walled version for the greater fluid capacity. Here in the south Florida the summer heat is extreme and I still use the old method that DutchIndo mentioned - fill half way and freeze, then top off with water before heading out. The canteen sweats a lot, but that just helps keep it a bit cooler.

Please note that it's $53-60 for just the canvas, and an additional $30 for the canteen itself. A great idea since everyone's big on buying and carrying bottled water in them instead of plain old tap water (which is most municipal areas is better filtered and less chemically treated than those pricey plastic bottles), it's something of an idea whose time has come AGAIN. One hopes that other manufacturers and retailers would come up with a more fairly priced alternative.

Neat look, but somehow the little pouch on the front for your Blackberry degrades the retro authenticity. Original metal canteens are still around if you look, but can be pricey. Maybe not as pricey as this one.
