Borsalino Homburg "Echter"

Black Echter Borsalino Homburg. It is a size 6 Punti and is in very good condition. Probably late 1950s.

My Application for the Brotherhood

So, a while ago I bid on a Borsalino on eBay, went to bed and in the morning I now owned a new hat.

Here's the eBay screenshot pic

Being new to hats in general Borsalino in particular, I wasn't sure what I'd let myself in for. My feeling of unease wasn't helped when a really squashed box appeared sometime later from USPS.

So after unpacking the equally squashed hat and some steaming and shaping later, this is what I have:

The hat is in great condition. It has clearly been well worn, but the felt is really nice - so soft in fact that it is easy to change the shaping by mistake.

It fits perfectly, just as though it has been on my head for years.

I have no idea as to when the hat was made, maybe someone can tell from the tags. I assume that the Borsalino logo in the liner is some kind of colour code? Looking through the treads, there seem to be lots of different colours used for this same logo.

This is a hat I really enjoy wearing - it is so soft that the disheveled Depp look comes naturally. :D

Here's one last image of me and the Borsa from earlier today:

Beautiful, lustrous color, and I love the bound brim. The crest, size tag, and price would indicate that this hat was made for export to. Color, as Alan already indicated in the other thread, is 'Palladio', or Palladium, only two atomic numbers away from my 'Rutenio'.

There has been speculation that the first two digits of the serial number in the tag indicates the production year, but this has not been proven to be true either via documentation, or from examination of the actual hats, except for contemporary examples. It is also unreliable to date Borsalino hats based upon taped versus sewn sweatband seam, or the corrugation at the front of the sweatband.

In any case, a wonderful Borsalino that looks great on you!
