Many thanks for the appreciations.
Steve this one will be back in action when restored. It has been a long time in the basement and needs care.
My collection includes almost exclusively European hats for several reasons. Borsalino is present with many "European" models, very different from what is being exported to the US. Making a very brief summary: their (Borsalino) sell "fashion hats" here, in the United States "the classic". There are different tastes and different markets, as you can see well from the (few) hats from Old Continent arriving on FL except Borsalino that is worldwide known. Borsalino has always had a line of hats for sale national and European and another for export (mainly in the United States). Believe me they are really different.
Anyway I will show you the others soon.
This is a modern Borsalino made in the eighties.
The ribbon has the name of the famous Alessandria hatter in gold and that was the seal of the production in those years
It is new. Came from a closed hats shop in the Marche, east centre of Italy.
The felt is really pliable and the color a bit undefined. It change with shadow and sun.
It's a melange of grey and brown.
The proportions are: raw brim at 7 cm and crown at 10. It could be easily crease without steam.
The interior of the hat has not so much more informations
A real good find in a lot of oldnew stock of recent Italians hats
Yes Steve the liner is stitched. It is a transitional Borsalino when the Antica Casa start to follow more the hats temporary fashion.
The trade mark became a sort of "sign" also outside the hats and there were helmets, portfolios, suit and so on marked Borsalino.
This hat is a good one, better than some modern of low price (always high as the marketing existing in Borsalino after the II WW).
From the 70' and 80' I prefer Barbisio, but is only my personal taste.
Im suprised that the lining is sewn into the hat. From the dating , it seems the hats is from around 1990. Borsalino didnt sewn in the linings after they moved in 1986. The color (34) is called Monlov.
Thank you Besdor for the explication about the color. Very interesting.
I'm perplexed about the age, it seems an eighties product .
On the other side when Borsalino put this prominent gold mark on the ribbon some finishing became more inaccurate (here in Italy) and this Borsalino has a really good finishing. Sometimes it is difficult to understand the trade policy of Antica Casa Borsalino.
I'm promoting a petition to ask Borsalino to have the same models you sell in New York available here in Italy
You have such beautiful hats Daniele and you seem spoilt for choice there in Italia - or is it just that you are so gifted at sniffing them out? It's pretty hopeless here in England trying to find much of merit.
Please sniff me out a vintage Barbisio in 57 or 58 (wide brim)!!!
Can you date that last Borso you posted?
Thanks Chris,
Italy was the home of such greats hatmakers during the last century and something remains in the basement and barns.
Not as much I hope to find because hats (fedoras, trilbies, homburgs etc.) are out of the masculine attire. In the last two years there are a sort of lukewarm awakening.
The Borsalino Savoy is not so much old. I think from the seventies, but I'm not the best to date hats.
For your request I will send you a PM.
Charlie I wish satisfy your request.
I have some hats more larger than 60. cm. but I regret no one (to be sure I will take measurements) arrive to cover your request.
I have a black Borsalino target 60 or 7 1/2 that is too big for my head and I get nervous everytime I see it.
